To sorr.e ver'.e te science of rlaying a good hand well Jn the
rame of life is to bluS with it.
The workisia who Tikes an interest la his work does not hava to
flend much of tia Uo.e locking for a job.
V.'e have room fcr but cce lcjV.ty at college and that is loyalty
to Nebraska University.
DOES IT PAY.
Eeicg courteous is a tab.! -h:ch is likely to develop Into a bank
account. There have been surely men who succeeded la business
perhars because their employees were net surly, but fortun never
theless, has preferred to keep steady company with the gentleman.
Every business can is looking for good will, because it constitutes
added capital. And the employer realizes that good will can never
be pained by sour faces ia his working staff. The public -will not
stand for discourteous treatment. It demands good humored sales
people who are willing to go out of their way to please thwlr cus
tomers. Courtesy pays la business but it also rays out cf.it, evea though
at times the dividends seem to be deferred. But lastly courtesy pays
the largest dividends in the form of happiness courons.
DEMOCRACY ON THE CAMPUS.
Nebraska has no room for the snob. It is our estimation that or
all the follies and Imperfections of which human nature is capable,
the n-.est detectable, the men excuseable is the so-called snob. Ac
cording to the snob one should be very careful to whom one is decent,
it smacks cf the plebian not to be exclusive. We are unable to fathom
the psychology of the snob, but we have come to the conclusion that
the manifestations exhibited by a encb are caused by his or her try
ing to be something they are not. V.'e contend that any student If he
Is natural or human, he can fcot be a snob.
The most striking characteristic cf the typical Nebraska man or
woman should be the ready "Hello" w;:h which every person encoun
tered on the street should be met. To welcome every student ef
fusively does not of cour?e constitute democracy unless the thing is
carried deeper than the surface. But everybody will have to admit
that a modest greeting goes & long ways toward promoting a feeling,
cf genuine good fellowship.
In the pioneer days of the University it was possible for every
student to personally know his classmates. The University has now
grown beyond this stage but we urge and strongly recommend a
genial smile or a brief word to all unknown classmates, as an outward
manifestation cf the democracy at Nebraska.
CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNERS.
Coach McMaster has issued a call for 100 cross-country runners.
Men, this makes It 200, Nebraska needs that large a squad. Ne
braska's track squads in the past have never compared with those
of other large universities as to the amount of material available.
Coach Schulte was at a disadvantage last sprg In developing bis
track team because of lack of material Cross-country running de
velops distance men and by a large squad out in this sport It will
make Schulte's task of developing distance Etars much easier.
Cross-country running is second to none of our popular sports
and when indulged in with discretion and wisdom Is In a class by
Itself no other physical activity giving the same returns in Improved
general health and especially in the beneficial effects upon the vital
organs. The element of recreatici Is now being recognized as of far
greater importance In all branches of physical training than was
formerly accorded to It In this regard cross-country running is
undoubtedly surpassed by foot ball, yet It has a fascination whico
cannot be appreciated by one who t never experienced its thrill.
