JUNIORS GET TITLE
IN FINAL DEBATE
(Continued from page one)
had failed to remedy and showed that
evils such as concentration of power,
the profit ideal, ovcr-capitull.atlon
and lack of safety devices were In
herent In the system and could not
be remedied. They showed that the
proposed Bystem was practical .eco
nomical and efficient in that it would
eliminate many unnecessary expenses
and do away with the waste of com
petition. Their final speaker argnel
that government ownership would
lessen useless litigation nnd eliminate
corruption and that it was the log
ical solution as the railroads were
for public service and all revenue
came from the public.
Freshmen Defend Present System
The Freshmen argued that the
change was unjustifiable since the
United States under private owner
ship had better service, lower rates
and higher wagos than any foreign
country with government owned rail
roads and that the present demand
for government operation came only
at a time of abnormal conditions.
Their second speaked showed that
the proposed system could not be ex
pected to work out efficiently because
of the political corruption that would
result. There would be too much
political patronage, a lack of dis
cipline, discrimination and "River and
Harbor" methods of appropriations
just as we have at the present time.
Their final argument was used to
show that the change was not prac
tical because of the enormous cost
which would he involved in the buy
ing of the roads. Over twenty bil
lion dollars would be required for
the payment and the government
would lose the annual tax from one
eighth of the land of the country.
They advocated more regulation as
has been used in the cases or tne
trusts.
In rebuttal both teams fought back
ami forth on the political question,
the juniors getting a little better
of the final score as they showed that
political domination was practiced
by the railroad corporation unaer me
present system, that men would be
picked under the civil service ruling
and that very little political corrup
tion such as promised by the neg
ative could be found in the big busi
ness of the postal system. The neg
ative likened the present situation to
a box car which needed added sup
port while an unusually heavy load
was being carried but which did not
need the extra support after the
extra burden was removed. The af
firmative pointed out that they were
arguing for the maintenance of the
support and the carrying of as big
cargo as possible all the time.
