A very Interesting letter has Just
heen received by Dr. G. W. A. Luckey
from Clara O. Wilson who is at Col
umbia university this year taking a
course In kindergarten work. She
gives a very vivid picture of Christmas
in New York City.
'.'The day before Christmas was one
1 shall never forget Several students
from the kindergarten department
were asked to help at the Labor Tem
ple and we spent the entire afternoon
giving out toys to the East Side slum
children. Hours before the time they
began to crowd about the doors and
when the hear finally arrived they
fairly burst in by the hundreds.
Ragged, dirty, of every nationality
but oh, so happy.
"There was a moment of silence
when the big Christmas tree was light
ed and then the children began to sing.
They wouldn't wait for the piano and
they wouldn't 'wait for the leader
they Just sang and sang.
. At 5 o'clock over a thousand chil
dren left the Temple, faces wreathed
in smiles (also smeared with candy)
and each one hugging tightly a doll
or toy." All of these gifts were given
by one woman. The evening was spent
at the candle light service at the old
Calvary church. A beautiful descrip
tion of the church is given and also
an account of a mystery play at the
Greenwich village theatre which be
gan at mid-night. Everyone she says
feels the seriousness of the war.
"The coal shortage here is most seri
ous, not only in the poorer districts
but over the entire city. In many beau
tiful apartments on Riverside they are
using electric beaters and oil stoves to
help out. The Teachers' college has
been closed entirely these two weeks
of vacation to save coal the first
time such a thing has happened in the
history of the school. But we have
faith that Uncle Sam will soon come
to the rescue." -
Paul H. Kies, who is teaching at
Sherman County High school at Good
land, Kan., writes that he has. glasses
in history and music and is managing
two glee clubs, two orchestras and
several other organizations. In March
he expects to put on the "Bohemian
