Most of the troubles we expect never happen, or are not half as bad as we expect them to be. Freshman caps should be conspicuous today. The registration has been bo large that some, who were so unfortunate as to have a late registration hour assigned them, will have to finish registration today. The enor mous yearly increase in attendance necessitates serious consideration of the rooming problem, and though second semester registration seems far distant at present, anyone with foresight can see that It is not too early to plan for the future. Today, when classes begin, new experiences will begin for everyone. The actual facts that are learned from text books are very important indeed, but far more important are the experiences which come with the grasping of these facts. A STORY "Once upon a time" there Jived a middle-aged professor who was very, very scholarly. He knew his Bubject from "a" to the end of the alphabet, and those Imaginary twenty six letters were strung together and formed a little pen around his thoughts and life so that he considered all those who knew nothing of his subject, very, very inferior. One day, during a recitation, he took occasion to disdain fully inform the student who was speaking, that he cer tainly had an "imagination." The student was affected as only biting sarcasm can affect, and at that moment made up his mind that he would show the professor a "thing or two." Today he is a well known writer and has realized success because of this imagination of his. Let's imagine a little more and not take things as prosaically as they seem. An Appeal to Football Men Where is the Nebraska spirit? That spirit that has been so much in evi dence other years. That spirit that has driven former Nebraska teams to victory from seeming defeat, that will never quit nor be conquered. That spirit which in former years has caused Nebraska men to give up long cherished ambitions, to make great sacrifices and to fight for their Alma Mater as long as they were able. The Bpirit which heretofore has brought out great numbers of men in response to the call for football warriors. Is it dead, or only asleep? Something is surely wrong. For the first time in years there are not enough men of the upper classes out to make two full teams. In Kansas they have from fifty to sixty varsity candidates out every night.- Notre Dame has four full imum UNI. JEWELER Coine and test our Service. New "U. of N" PINS FOBS RINGS Waterman and Moore Pens. Esth. 1871 1143 0 teams of varsity men for every prac tice. At California, where football has been in use only two years, there have been around two hundred and fifty, and at Oregon, a school much smaller than Nebraska, they have fifty or more. And Nebraska has twenty-twd varsity candidates. This is a deplorable state of affairs and must be remedied if Nebraska is to hold the high position in football which she has gained in the last few years. Coach Stewart says, "A school the size of Nebraska and with her reputa tion should have three times as many upperclassmen out as have reported so far. Such spirit, in .reporting in such small numbers, is what will spell defeat for Nebraska quicker than any one other thing." A statement such as that puts it up squarely to every upperclassmen with any athletic ability whatever to get out there on the field and do his best to make the team. The coach has promised that every man that gets out will be given every possible chance to show what kind of jroods he can deliver. And as a little secret between you and us, we'll tell you that a little bird told us not to tell, but that there are three or four places on the team, to fill which the men have not as yet appeared. Let's all do our best, and if there is any one we know who ought to be out on the field, let's get him there. All the old high school players ought to be out this afternoon and help give Nebraska a team that is worthy to represent the great university which so far has always brought nothing but honor ttud glory to her fair name. By the end ot the week Dick hopes to have a team out of his raw material which will make the varsity go at its best when the two teams meet Saturday. The addition of two eligible varsity men 1b looked for this week, DobBon and Proctor, both of whom are at pres ent suffering from f minor injuries. Maloney will also be out. Much gossip is heard these days about the new system of play In which there is no regular center And there are Ave backfleld men. One of the backfleld men passes the ball side ways and then gets into the. Interfer ence. This will be a real Innovation in Missouri valley football and ought to be very effective, since a change can be made to the old form, with a center and four backfleld men, at any time.
