"Cub" Wiley, the find of the year on
the cinder path, was the one to suc
cumb. He is rated as "the fastest
man in the Missouri Valley in the
hundred," broad jumps within a few
inches of the American Intercollegiate
records, and by way of variety, holds
a high school record of six feet one
Inch In the high jump. Bill Maxwell,
who showed promise In the hurdles,
has left school and Is now working
In Omaha. Garrison, distance man,
is reported to be out for the rest of
the track season. Coach Reed Is
holding his breath until all the re
ports are In, for fear some more of
the track men are In the lists of the
missing. The varsity has a quartet
of good weight men In Shaw, Hlddell,
Kositzky and Corey, but needs sprint
ers, hurdlers and more distance men
to make a well rounded out team.
It is possible that these scholastic
difficulties may be so adjusted as to
make the men eligible. If so, Corn
husker track prospects will pick up
about a thousand per cent, but now the
future seems anything but promising.

No Game at Omaha
Some wide-awake sport writer on
an Omaha paper has uncovered an In
genious way for getting around the
Missouri Valley rule against playing
football games In such cities as Omaha
and Kansas City. He says, "If the
Cornhuskers can go to Portland be
cause a part of the Oregon Agricul
tural college la located there, why
couldn't they play in Omaha because
the College of Medicine Is located
here?" The Omaha football fans are
keen for a big game next fall and
are moving mountains to try and se
cure one. Technically the Portland
and Omaha arguments are parallel and
yet It has been the sentiment of the
conference authorities to keep the
game as free from commercialism as
Dossible. It was for this reason that
off-the-campus games were forbidden.
We Agree With Abe
Did you read the article In the Sun
day Journal about athletics at Mis
souri? We are forced to admit, with
Abe Martin, that the author was
either a lunatic or a darn fool." And
what is worse, one of those responsi
ble for Its publication In the Journal
had the short-sightedness to say it
was a "very interesting and accurate
account." Needless to say the per
son In question is bitterly opposed to
intercollegite sports, or other activities
which promote friendly relations be
tween schools and between the univer
sity men taking part in such contests.

Kansas
Those old timers, who were lucky
enough to be around Lawrence in the
good old days of 1899 and the ever-
victorious football team of that year,
got a real treat when Fielding H.
(Hurry Up) Yost blew into town for
a flying visit with his old friend, Hugh
Blair, a downtown real estate man.
While refusing to be really Inter
viewed, Hurry Up admitted that he
had gained considerable success at
the University of Michigan in the past
fifteen years, since ho ieft Kansas,
after giving the K. U. the greatest
team in its history.
Vost was one Kansas coach that
succeeded in getting away from the
Cornhuskers, and the resulting all-
victorious team of 1899 justified the
experiment.
Princeton
There are at present eighty-two
freshmen and sophomores and sixteen
upper-classmen working as waiters,
ushers, doormen and floor captains in
the university dining halls. The stu
dents do not do any . of the rougher
work, such as table setting, sweeping,
etc., this being done by professionals,
who also help serve when any student
is absent. This system of student
employment was installed only at the
beginning of the past year, and is a
success both from the standpoint of
the students benefited and from the
higher quality of service obtained.
Harvard authorities who advised
Princeton not to try such a system,
are now preparing to take it up.
Baylor
The "North America" defeated the
"South Americas" in soccer, on Car
roll field, says the Lariat. A team .
of the Brazilians In Baylor suffered
defeat at the hands of the Texas
players. It Is true that Texas and
Brazil are about the largest states
in their respective continents, but they
are not of the same continent. Why
not say "All Brazil" and "All Texas"
teams?
Baseball practice begins with a vim
at Baylor. The new material is very
promising and the old men have come
back strong.
Washington
Twenty-three drawings of suggested
seals for the University of Washing
ton, to replace the one now used, were
submitted in a prize contest arranged
by President Suzzallo, but all were re
jected.
The objection to the present seal
of the university is that it is exactly
like that of the University of Cal
ifornia, except that the motto "lux sit"
is In English "let the light ehine."

Professor Meany says a blacksmith
designed the original ' Washington
seal.
Chicago
The co-eds of the University of Chi
cago have gone on a strike because,
in certain lecture courses, they are
not permitted to alt on the same side
of the room with the male students.
Columbia
Strange as it may seem, Columbia
was founded more than a. century be
fore she had a dean of departments.
The office of dean of the school of
arts was the first one created, in
1889. The first appointee to the office
of dean was Henry Bisler, LL.D., of
the class of 1839. Dean Bisler was
emerited in 1885, after fifty-two years
of service at Columbia.
