Ticket Place Is Fixed Up as a Warm

Method of Flooding
We are son to have the much dis
cussed skating rink on the Athletic
field In reality. For the last four
days an export in this matter has
been flooding the field. Now It is cov
ered with a Bheet of lee more than a
foot thick. We will have good skat
ing as decided by the weather Mon
day night.
The failure to flood it successfully
before has been due to the wrong
method of flooding. The water in the
city mains is several degrees warm
er than the ground. Therefore the
lower part of the water that ran ofT
the ground thawed the ground, while
the upper part froze, thus forming a
crust of ice which was unsafe. The
new method consists of throwing the
stream of water up into the air, thus
lowering the temperature of the water
before striking the ground.
The ticket office has been fitted up
as a warming place for the skaters.
A nominal fee of 10 cents will be
charged for entrance until the ex
pense of flooding the field is provided
for. After that there will be no ad
mission fee.
Miss Eva Miller, '18, left for Oma
ha last evening to hear Pademvski.
A Scholarship Secretary, assistant
to Dean Engberg, will be appointed
with the beginning of the new se
mester, on request of the fraternities
of the University. One of his duties
will be to compile comparative re
ports of the scholarship averages of
the different fraternities twice a se
mester instead of two times a year
as formerly. He will also give a com
plete report of the standing of any
given man in his studies, on request
of the man's fraternity. The fra
ternities feel that with this coopera
tion, the improving scholastic average
may be raised still further.
The formal season opened Saturday
evening, when the Junior class gave
its "prom" at the Lincoln hotel, with
ninety-five couples in attendance. The
party was a dinner-dance, dinner be
ing served at 6:30, and dancing start
ing two hours later.
Green candles were placed at the
tables during the progress of the din
ner. There were no oiner aecuriuuna.
The programs were very dainty, with
the University seal emblazoned on the
corner.
Snray Gardner, master of eeremon
ies. and Roy Harney, chairman of the
committee, led the grand march with
Miss Marguerite Woodruff and Miss
Doris Scroggin. The chaperones lor
the party were Chancellor and Mrs.
Samuel Avery, Prof. Searle Davis,
Guy E. Reed and Miss Mary Graham.
