NEWTON SCENTS FALLACIES
Declares Prof. Paul H. Grumman Mis
quoted Statements Published
in State Journal
Felix Newton has sent the following
letter to the University Board of Re
gents :
"Lincoln, Nebr., Dec. 6, 1915.
"To the Honorable Board of Regents
of the University of Nebraska, Lin
coln, Nebr.
"Gentlemen:
"I desire respectfully to direct your
attention to the letter of Professor
Grummann which appeared in the Ne
braska State Journal under date of
November 25 last, signed Paul H.
Grummann. I feel confident that I
voice the concensus of the opinion of
alumni and of the people of Nebraska
when I say that your honorable body
should take official notice of this mat
ter. I am enclosing herewith for your
Information the clippings revealing his
misquotations, also described as ex
hibits A, B, C, D, E. .
"I am perfectly in harmony with the
board of regent's logical ruling which
was given out a year ago in the com
plaint against another member of the
faculty. I believe that every professor,
as well as each individual, is entitled
to his opinion, reason and logic. But
I do object to any man, especially to
one who occupies a responsible posi
tion in the University of Nebraska,
and with the prestige of the university
behind him as a guarantee of his ca
pacity as a historian and a well in
formed man, to misgote the title of
a book and also misquote what the
author said in another book, in order
to build up a German propaganda
against the English speaking peoplo.
"After I called his attention a few-
days later to his erroneous quotations,
he replied that 'I read Vizetelly's his
tory last summer.' As a matter of
fact, a book of that title hns never
been published anywhere under the
sun. But his most serious offense from
the moral and educational standpoint
and by way of furnishing a bad exam
ple to students, is his use of quota
tion marks when he admits that he
Lad not seen the source for about half
a year. Such conduct is a fraud on
the public. If such deceptions are to
be permitted, I suggest to your honor
able body the abolition of the depart
ment of rhetoric.
"Professor Grummann says in his
reply that he docs not know history
Permit me to quote him: 'My chief
work Is not history, and I do not work
with historical sources at my elbows.'
If Professor Grummann, who is the
head of fine arts, does not know his
torr. how does he know how to lec
ture about fine arts, which requires a
greater knowledge of history than the
average professor of history pos
sesses?
"If a student of the University
should cony from any body during the
examinations, he would be considered
as immoral, and would be subject to
expulsion. Yet Professor Grummann,
who soiled the good name of the Insti
tution of which I am an alumnus,
seeks to Justify himself by hasty and
fallacious generalizations. I am frank
to say that Professor Grummann nas
broken the ethical and moral laws of
the University and of the educational
system in general. It Is an offense
which deserves severe censure at your
bands. I trust that you will take such
action as the occasion demands, and
thereby clear up the University's good
name. Very respectfully,
"FELIX NEWTON."
