Great Bend. Kan. Twelve persons
at least were killed and more than
one hundred Injured, many of them se
riously. In a tornado which swept
through the residence section of Great
Bend at 7:30 Wednesday nlshL
The property loss Is estimated at
half a million dollars. The city water
plant, a laundry, three flouring mills,
the Santa Fe depot and fifty resi
dences were demolished. A path
three-quarters of a mile long and
several blocks wide was cut through
the residence district. Here the
heaviest toll of life was exacted.
Fire broke out In several of the
houses, and as the city was without
Ore protection they burned to tht
ground.
Among the towns in which buildings
were reported destroyed were Clafton,
Holslngton, and Lamed.
Several thousand sheep were killed,
the animals being hurled into the ail
as the storm struci their feedinfc
place.
Americans Lost on Ancona.

Americans are believed to have been
lost with the torpedoed Italian liner

state department from Ambassador

The ambassador said the probable
American victims of the tragedy were
Alexander Patattivo, his wife and four
children of New York and Mrs. Fran
ces Mascolo Lamura and about twen
ty unnamed third class passengers.

American survivor among the pas

London. A dispatch to Lloyds from
Bizetra says that 300 persons on the
Ancona were drowned. Most of the
lost, the message says, were women
and children emigrants.

FRANCE TO BE HEAVY BUYER
Millions for Machinery, Once Spent
in Germany, Will Come to
United States.
New York. France will be a heavy
buver of American machinery at the
close of the war, Maurice D' Amour,
head of a French commercial and in
dustrial commission which has just
arrived here, asserted.
"Heretofore we have tpent $160,-
000.000 a year In Germany for machin
ery alone," said D'Amour. who was
formerly French consul at New Or
leans and is now secretary of the
commission on appropriations in the
French chamber of deputies.
"That money will go to the United
States."

Business Section Destroyed by Fire.
Miller. Neb. The business portion
of this town is In ruins as the result
of a fire, from unknown origin, which
started at 4 o'clock Tuesday morning.
The loss is estimated at J59 000 and
practically all the business section of
the city is destroyed. Among the
heavier losers were Clyde M. Maddox,
hardware store; C M. Houston, gen
eral merchandise; Bank of Miller;
Miller postofflce; Mrs. Walker's res
taurant; the Norcross Drug company;
Stickel's lodge ball; Joe Dean's shoe
shop.
Football Special Train
The Union Pacific railroad will run
a special train to Lawrence, Kan
J Friday, for the football game between
the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the
Kansas Jayhawkers. It leaves Lincoln
at 11 p. dl, and will leave Lawrence
at midnight Sunday, arriving in Lin
coln at 7 a- m., Sunday.
