FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1915 "Making an effort to do a thing is next to actually doing it." BELLS, RING TRUE It is very discouraging to find that one has reached a class room just as a professor has finished calling the roll, especially when there seemed to have been ample time for getting there. Recently such a state of affairs has been due, not to tardiness on the part of the students, but to the fact that there has been a noticeable incon sistency in the time of the ringing of gongs in the various buildings. When a gong sounds the fifty minute period in one building, it should, a the same instant, announce the same time in every other building. Such has not been the case this past week. Complaint in regard to this matter comes not alone from the student body, which is marked tardy or absent, but from members of the faculty who must contend with the inconvenience. Ferhaps the gongs will ring at one and the same time in all of the buildings this coming school week. "Dad" Elliott is "Hitting the Quitters" at the University of Wisconsin. Are we next? Coach Stiehm said last night that Nebraska faces the hardest proposi tion In Kansas that she has faced In years, but added that Nebraska ought to win. Captain Rutherford is of the opinion that the game will be the hardest on this year's schedule. With the exception of Chamberlain and Gardiner, the men are in good physi cal shape. Two special trains will leave Lin coln tonight carrying the band and several hundred rooters direct to Lawrence. Coach Olcott put a slight damper on Jayhawker Jubilance when he an nounced the results of secret practice Tuesday, in which the regulars show ed up in- poor form. He is hopeful, however, and is especially encouraged since all the varsity will be in good shape to go into the Nebraska game. RHETORIC STUDENTS SING LAW'S SONG (Continued from page 1) commandement (if you don't know what it is, ask the Laws.) At first he counselors in the law shnn" were sure that they had a good cause of action, but upon later con sideration it is feared that the ac tion must be dismissed. Tt seems that some of the culprits themselves were Law students. They certainly cannot be joined as parties defendant for such a case would cause a feud in the College of Law. Such a state of affairs could not be tolerated for a moment, for then how could the Laws drown out the Comics so completely at Convocation. Verily, in union there is strength, and upon calm, cool, afterthought the com plainants decided to forego their "law- ing," and instead prepare for the mid- semesters, which have been depress ing them for several days. Two days before the championship battle with Nebraska Saturday, Lawrence is filled with more excitement and anticipation than the old town has experienced since the day the ever-victorious team of 1908 left for Lincoln. The old grads, who are flocking to Lawrence daily, gather at the historic meeting places and compare present conditions with those of 1908. In many respects the coming clash with the Nebraskans resembles the game of 1908 which so upset existing dope that it was considered the surprise of the day in western circles. Nebraska had won easily in the early season games from such worthy foes as Iowa, Ames who had been picked for the championship and the Haskell In diana. Tt followed shortly after a string of Nebraska victories similar to those during the last few years, and the Cornhuskers were doped to win easily. There was confidence here, however, and alumni who were taking a special interest In the game, instill ed a fighting spirit In the team which sent them to Lincoln to outplay the Huskers to the tune of 20-5. And 'so there is a feeling here at Lawrence that the old days have come again. Coach Chauncey "Beau" Ol cott instituted a campaign right after he had seen the Nebraskans in action against Notre Dame which centerel around the observation that "they're human they can be beat." Grim and battle-scarred veterans of forgotten days came back to life and wrote red hot letters to the newspapers, de nouncing the spirit at K. TJ., character izing it as half-hearted. Scouts wtll be sent every ten minutes from the Armory to the Daily Star office to get the returns of the Kansas- Ne braska game. A mass meeting of all University girls will be held promptly at 2:30 o'clock Saturday, November 13, in the Memorial hall, to discuss the point system of evaluating extra-curriculum college activities and to pas3 a definite resolution upon it Whether it is advisable to adopt the point system at the University of Nebraska Is a question that has been Vending for three years. This system ' proved successful at Michingan, Tex as, Minnesota, Wellesley and Vassar, and some University authorities think it is time that some definite action be taken upon It at Nebraska. The point system regulates a num ber of college activities that a girl may take part in. Each activity counts a certain number of points. Membership In a sorority, class team, the Y. W. C. A. are included in the list. The purpose of the point system is to distribute activities among more students. Prominent University girls who have made a careful investiga tion of the system will give detailed explanations of Its good and bad feat ures. Girls who do not know about the point system should come to the meeting and learn what It is. Those who do know, should help the Uni versity by taking a definite stand either for or against a question that s so vital to them.
