Miss Barbara Osborn, '14 Assistant Editor WEDNESDAY, MAY 13, 1914. EDITORIAL. It is nothing but right that I, at 1 this tlmo, shall thank those who havo helped to make this "Pharmacy Edi tion" such a largo edition. Being our first attempt at editlng-a-nGwapapej. It was probably not as good as was j looked for; but we cannot blame this I on tho enthusiasm nor on tho help of tho studentB and teachers, for they wero tho groat factors In making this Ibsuo. Thoy responded royally with M-laugKaaHonq niul subject matter and lel50TroUthc--vork-io-4v-veuy-gUiiiL3nc: tent. Such rosponslvenesB Is only In dicative of good fellowship which Is over shown In this School of Phar maoy. Another foaturo was tho great help of our advortlsors. Without them, wo could probably not havo mailed our Issue to ovory registered pharmacist in tho stato, such as wo havo done. Tho School of Pharmacy, through Its teachers, students and advertisers, havo mailed one of 2,000 copies of this largo edition to ovory registered phar macist in tle stato. This is the first tlmo that tho "Pharmacists" have had :PlirtrSTn7turiy-nrlr-u nwl narfnlnlv :. v. . . .: wont at It with tho right spirit. This edition of the "Rag" is about 3,300 copies, and Is probably tho largest -nnmhnr prjntntl in one day for a sod ety or school. ARIZONA CACTUSES . (Pnntlnuod from pago 1) Those aro Invariably very prickly, but some of thorn bear fruits ("pears" tolclL-iinr!leSBNcJc!w greedily eaton by tho hungry anlmalsT A landscape filled wltti these treelike cnctUBcs has a vory curious appear ance and one novor to bo forgotten. On of tho most intorosting of all tho cactuses of tho southwest Is tho one which bears tho local name of BIsnaga (Echlnocactus). It Is commonly a foot or two In diameter and one to two feot In holght, although I have seen speci mens that wero double this in holght and ovon sometimes six or eight foot, with a corresponding diameter. This Is the only one of tho cylindrical cac tuses that contains a juice which can bo used to slako thirst, and many a Mexican when very thirsty has re lieved this thirst by cutting off tho top of tho plant, crushing tho Interior Into a pulp nndthon -drinking the Julco which ho squeezed from the pttlp. ThiB Ib Bald to bo a vory com mon. moanB for securing water for drinking. The moat striking of tho cactuaeB of tho southwest Is tho 8ahuaro (Carne giea). This grows up as a simple fluted cylinder from ten to twonty, thirty, forty or moro feet In holght. After attaining a considerable height it usually branches and those branches themselves" irgalir sometimes produce other branches. Thoy grow on tho hillsides and somewhat on the mosa and give a very peculiar appear ance to the landscape. Those plants, xonrmonlr RnoWir ub the giant cac tuses, aro very Blow growing In tholr earlier yearn. Specimens In their fourth year were found to bo not more than one Inch In height, but as they grow oldor they Increase moro rapidly In height. One greaTspecnnuir abouf- ten miles from tho laboratory has been photographed annually for the past eleven years,- and careful measure ments of those photographs have en abled tho botanists to mako out that thq grjawjh,j)er year when tho plants Tmrforty -fcet-hlgh or so Is tilJi IllchCBT and sometimes even eight or nine inches. Undor cortaln circumstances of course they grow more slowly than hls, but by measuring tho holght and then estimating on tho basis of six Inches per year it is not difficult to make out about the age of tho great plants. The' Sahuaros blossom In May, the blossoms being on stalks of from four to five Inches In length and tho spread of tho blossoms Is approximately threo or four Inches. They aro whltlBh with a pearly pink color. Before closing this extremely super ficial sketch of tho big cactuses of the southwest I may say that we havo specimens growing in tho University plant houses of all that I have men- tioned-abovei WnJmw hiwi fnr some time cortaln spineless ones, and on my recont visit to Arizona I secured now specimens of the wild spineless forms. Of the Blsnagas we have had for some years a good specimen which Is about fifteen or olghtoon Inches in height and nearly as much In diameter. Re- -eenuy-tno-Ummim:rur un'-iittSfrr-kAi oratory at Tucson (Doctor-MacDougalL sent ub a portion of a stem of the Sahauro. This Is nearly threo foet In length and nine or ton Inches In diam eter. It has already borne one flower and within a day or so I am looking for two or three more flowers to ap pear. This Is without question tho first time in the history of the world whpn-Sahauroplania produced blos soms In Nebraska.
