FIFTH SYMPHONY PROGRAM DRAWS LARGE CROWD Mendelssohn's "Italian Symphony" Especially Pleasing History of ProductlonT" 1 Tho Fifth Symphony program at convocation was well attended yester day. This entertainment was the "Italian Symphony" by Mendeleshon. Tho following information regarding the "Italian Symphony" will be of in terest to those interested in music: Mendelssohn wrote this symphony In 1831 at the age of 22. He was in Italy at tho time, and in this composi tion he intended to suggest in musical form somo characteristic phases of Italian scenes and Italian life. Tho work begins with an allegro vivace," and the violins sweop off In an easily followed theme accompanied by the wind Instruments. One may fancy In Its lively gayety the blue skies, the clear air, and the gonial brightness of the Italian climate. JBrfiflojntly. the second theme appears, but this time the instrumentation is revofSSuTttn3 wood wlrrtlB I cadlngrj while tho strings lightly and playfully attend upon them. Farther on comes an episode in fugal form which in its sombre minor perhaps suggests the romance ami half history of early cen turies. Into tho mldBt of this passage bursts forth again the first theme, while tho fugal play continues, the gay and sombre, moods vying,, as it wereA for supremacy. Tho movement ends In the triumph of brightness and Joy. The andanto melody of the second movement has something of a ballad character, telling its Bad story with simple directness and without over Whelming emotion. Very impressive Is the Bolemn, antique-sounding, steady chant of the reeds, with tho elaborate accompaniment above 'of the flutes and the-contrapuntal-basB, The SGCond-l verso- of the ballad is told by tho strings alone In tho minor, the lower strings supplying tho fateful, mysteri ous background. The scherzo suggests bucolic Blm- j)UcIty.Tho graceful and nlavful mel odyis followed by a beautiful and ro mantlo trio In which the mellow horns play an important part. Tho last movement Is called salta rello presto, and imitates the lively Italian danoo of that namo, with Its sudden Jumps and skiDB. To this meny dance is joined later tho Btill wilder tarantella, with its mad whirls. The combination of tho two rhythms is made with astonishing skill, and (ho ivhole movement is evidently in spired by tho contagious madness and abandon, of he Roman carnival. Mendelssohn was" well named Felix. Born In prosperity, thoroughly edu cated amid scholarly and refining in fluences, his precocious talents wisely guided; by tender and appreciative par ents and friends,' he developed while still in bis te'ens Into a" fully matured mastei ??""???????????????
