Entered at tho postofllco at Lincoln, Nebraska, as second-class mall matter under thu Act of Congress of March 3, 1870. ThCHo lino days nro conducive to spring poetry. The UBual outburst will no doubt soon make itself heard. But lot it come. There are worse things than spring to talk about. Really it is the normal and not the abnormal who are affected by the season. There is no harm in appreciating a blue sky or flower beds breaking open or moon light on the grass after the dew has fallen at night, nor is there any harm In writing poetry about them, pity take the man dead to a world full of such things. The harm comes in, as some one has Bald, only when tho stuff is printed. Mr. WlckerBham, the lecturer, sayB that your head Is for use, It is "not a nut on the end of tho back bone, put there simply to keep your collar on." It would seem thnt most everybody ought to have arrived at that conclu sion, but. Bad to say, there are those who have not. Anyway, there are those outside the Iron fonco whohnvo not, and If those inside the fence use the cranial Bection of their anatomy, one thing Ib certain, some of them use it after the manner of a gaB tank, as a place to Btore things till they are needed, then to bo drawn out agnin. Such people do not think much, of course, for to them a University prp cents simply an aggregate of definite facts, these to bo stored In the chinks of the cerebrum jiiBt as occaBlon re quires, or aB they desire to have some thing to produce at a later time and surprise somebody else by the pro fundity of their mental capacity. To got down .to thinking out a problem for themselves Is quite beyond tholr reach. Would we could all learn that a University is a place to teach think ing not a gas generator. Or even the following, which was consclenclously dashed toff by a young poet whoso former works had been criticised for their lack of local color: "To many a sky-blue river, On many a saffron shore, Where the pearl-gray shadows quiver, And the mouse-green breakers roar, "Tlie roso'hued maid Is going To speh'd a. week or two Where the brick red kino are lowing And the .moadow-breezo is blue. "She'll leave tho fresh, green fellow At work In the grim, gray town, And read the romances yellow In the forest's vandlke-brown."
