(Continued from pngo 1.) different ' in the two countries. "Ow ing to' our widely different ncadomic system, and our deep-seated social contrast, we have not been able to adjust ourselves, nil nt once, to the opportunities afforded by the Rhodes bequest. In the future wo must np- point with some concrete sense of the nctual circumstances ns they oxist at Oxford, for it would bo nn absurdity were wo to confess that wo had not the material. "And this dingnosls," says the writer "receives strong corpboratlon from tho achievements of Rhodians sent by British colonies. Tho proportion of colonials to Americans is about three to eight, notwithstanding which tho former won nine honors and prizes while the Americans gained only three. From this wo are not to Infer that coloninl brains are better than our own. Tho colonials are tralnod, and what is oven moro important, chosen by men who are fully alivo to the kind of typo that will take root in the Oxford environment without any loss of time. Tho ofllclals pro pose to have their scholars reflect glory upon the colonial universities just as tho English scholars do upon their schools. To bo brief, and to use a common expression, the colonial uni versities are 'next.' Wo are not, and our pressing- business is to remedy this defect at once." The sending of graduates Is dis couraged by tho writer because he says it Is not in accordance with tho spirit of the bequest. .An appeal Is also made that wo send rich men's sons, who, like their fellow students, will pass through tho university, with out pretense, purely for its social ad vantages. "Only, see to it," ho adds, "that remittances are regular and generous." Miss Alice Howell, Adjunct Profes sor In the Elocution Department, who Is at present taking further training in one of tho best schools of expres sion at Boston will conduct two classes in Elocution in the University Summer Session.
