"It Is the duty of every citizen to become conversant with the institu tions and resources of his state," said he, "and as the sand hill country com prises about one-fifth of tho area of Nebraska it merits our attention." Of the two great projects now be ing undertaken to reclaim this area, irrigation and forestry, tho former is generall? thought to no tho most suc cessful, wherens experience proves thut forestry Is much more Important. This 1b due to the fact that a foreBt provides a more rellablo as well as a steadier supply of moisture than a system of irrigation ditches and this at a much less cost. The size of the sand, hill country Is much greater than the average citizen of Nebraska realizes. Extending southward from the northorn border of the state to the Platte and as far east as the Loup, it includes within its confines an area one-fifth the size of the entire state. As to the origin of the sand hills, Dr. Wolcott said there were numerous theories Tho most probable one, however. Is that they were formed by west winds blowing across the sandstone buttes in tho extreme, west ern part of the state and carrying the sand into the valleys whence it drift ed into the hills which we find today. In concluding his address, Dr. Wol cott predicted a bright future for what is now commonly known as the great Nebraska deBert. By planting, pine tnees upon its hills the moisture of the region will be Increased, vege tation wjll grow more abundantly and the value of the country for agricul tural purposes will be greatly en hanced. Of course this will take time, a century, or perhaps oven longer, but once accomplished the results will amply .reward the. government for the millions It will have spent in the reclamation. And the surest method of reclaiming the region from its pres ent semi-arid condition is forestry. Senior Invitations. The sample of the Senior invitations has arrived at last and orders must be given to some member of the com mittee at once. 'At once means AT ONCE in this case, as an order will be sent tonight. Cash should accom pany the orders, but if you haven't your pocketbook with you today, give ono of the committee the number you want and bring your money tomorrow. The invitations are certainly neat and nobby and of the finest workman ship. The class colors, the year and the seal of the school are worked into a pretty frontpjece. An engraving graces the second T?age, followed by the usual invitation, class "roll, com mencement week program and list of class officers. The orders can be given today at chapel time in the Nebraskan office or this afternoon in the library. Re member, this is your last and only chance. Convocation. Wednesday, May 16 Prof. J. T..
