Tho advance manager was Immediately recalled, for without tho entertainments in San Francisco ' the trip would be impossible. This la tho outcome of what was commonly known as tho biggest trip over taken by any Nebraska represen tatives. It Is with much rogret that the students soo this vonturo go down and out. Every student had consid ered It a groat thing to have tholr Qleo and Mandolin Clubs make a trip of about 6,000 miles, and they looked forward to the harvest It would bring. No doubt It would have been one of tho greatest advertising mediums over sent out by tho University. Tho Editor of Tho Nebraskan: Sir: Tho University boys who came out to tho Dismal River Forest Roservo at tho beginning of the EaBter vacation aro getting a course of tainlng that Is well worth tho trouble. Some of the peoplo who think that the forestry students go to . tho Reserve every spring to enjoy a, vacation of undis turbed rest and then come back after examinations to receive credit for tho things that they observed, Bhould bo allowed another gueBB. This Is the place to which forestry students aro sont for a try-out, and the particular studonts In question recently had a rather Bovoro test After the Senior Prom and the Junior party of Friday night, which all of the boys attended In spirit, a shirt-tall parado was or ganized with tho object of watching tho fire-works from the hill-top near by. It was found that a prairie fire, with a front of seven or eight miles, was burning in tho direction of the Reserve, fanned by a-llght breeze. Tho master of ceremonies was notified and after considerable telephoning to ranches In tho neighborhood of the firo, it was decided, at 1:30 a. m., that tho working force should turn out and fight. The assistant supervisor, tho five college mon and eight other work ers left for the scone of action about 2:30 a. m. They rode twelve or fif teen miles, fought fire for more than slxmlles, returning only after tho fire had been extinguished. It was after 4 p. m. whon tho last man arrived at the station. No ono had had more than a sllvo of bread and a few spoon fuls of canned beans sinco supper time on Friday, and water had been very scarco throughout. The Univer sity boys had been, practically wlthJ out sleep for forty hours; others had had three or four hours apleco. It 1b needless to say that f6od and rest woro decidedly welcome. Book, Store. much' work as the laborers locally hired, the .forestry students aro receiv ing first-class treatment at .the hands of tho forest Service mon at tho sta tion. The laborers are housed In tents; tho students have tho ubo of a spacious room in tho headquarters building, and this will bo theirs while they stay, unless some bigger mon como out from Washington, which does not seem probable at present. They enjoy the privilege of canvas cots, bath and toilet, and all tho other conveniences which the energy and In dustry of the Forest Service men have made possible in this out-of-the-way place. Thoy aro tho right-hand mon of the assistant supervisor, who Is tempprarlly in charge here, and ho takes a great lntorost In their wants and desires. Each student .is the prime factor in a crew of three men, who work together regularly. These crews aro the units of tho working (Continued on page 4.)
