Last evening the debating team left for Wisconsin, yet how many students were aware of -the fact? How many seemed to realize that tho Nebraska team was to faco hor strongest oppo nent In her history of debating? If general Judications counted for any thing, nobody knew and nobody , scemod to caro, and if tho team won all would suddenly become enthusias tic and howl how proud she Was of her team. Yet could not this onthusi- been entirely Indifferent to their pro gress, seeming to ignorb their efforts, and never covn uttered encourage ment to them. Such a condition of affairs is almost deplorable, and it, Indeed, detracts from tho Intellectual standing of the student body. Men and women will howl themselves hoarse over some athlollc cvoiU and make tin gods dut of members of the teams (this is said without reflection on any athletic con test), but where the mind must bring victory the students seem to think It Is more pious to remain quiet and in different. To which, then, In the Uni versity, arc wc lending our encourage ment, the muscle workers or the brain workers? To the former, of course, and when wo do It wo forget the primary object for which the Univei sity was established. Athletics an all right when they go hand In hanc with Intellectual training, but when tho latter is forgotten thon it Is time to call a hall.
