Iance Co ii n ty. Bowman ; Treas urer, S. L. S.turdevant ; Clerk, J. N. Re nolds ; Surveyor, Jno. Ilaskins ; Supt. Public Instruction, Danl. Bar ker; Corouer, G. W. Davis. II. Jt M. Taxes The question of the settlement of the taxes on the B. & M. R. R. lands iu this county is becoming quite important to the other tax-payers of the countv. Iu round numbers, the amount claimed as due from the Company is $1S,000. This includes the taxes for the years lS73,-'4,-'5,-'G,-7 and 'S. We are informed that the Company, by their agent, Assist Land Sup't Pects, has offered to pay sixty per cent, of the entire amount claimed, asserting that there is a great deal of it that was improperly and illegally assessed, and therefore not collectable at law. This may be true, but if the Railroad Compa ny act upon the principle that they will only pay when they are thereto compelled, at the extreme end of a legal contest, it might be well enough for our county authorities to act upon a similar basis. The truth aud the right, as wc see jit, is this: this railroad company has no more rights in the premises than the poorest land-owner or tax payer of us all. If the B. & M. can get off whole with paying six-tenths of its taxes, the entire body of those who do actually pay their taxes should, in a mass, demand the same rebate. What great .thing has this corporation done for us that wc should add to our own burden what wc take off from them! If the Commissioners should accept GO per cent, then $7200 is added to the remainder of the tax-payers' bur den. The better way would be, if the Company will not pay their taxes, as assessed, offer their lauds for sale and buy them in. If the County will do this the Railroad Company will be put upon the de fensive, aud the matter will proba bly be settled in some shape before another six-years' term of non-tax-pay ing is allowed to ruu. Write Home. Dowagiac, Cass Co., Mich. September 26th, 1879. Ed. Journal, Sir: Can you tell us something about Jacob Judd? Has that Eclipse made it so dark for him that he can't see to write a few lines to his parents? If ro, please tell him to light a lamp aud write. We would like to hear from Stearns or Grand Prairie once more. Wc write often but hear nothing. Respectfully yours, Mrs. Elizabeth Judd. We print the above for several very good reasons, among which we enumerate: First, it isaddressed to the editor of the Journal, and is intended by the writer for publica tion. Second, Jacob Judd may be regarded as the name of a class of individuals, good meaning enough, but who leave their old home and old friends in the cast, and, getting into the swift current of business and work in the west, don't take time to let the old folks at home know how they arc flourishing, or but seldom do they do this. Jacob Judd is in this case not peculiar. Every mother's son, and daughter, too, for that matter, is just like him. There may bean exception, here and there, but they are so few as only to emphasize the rule. We have actu ally known people in this western country to live within a mile of each other for ten years, aud never get time to make a call. They arc "too busy," and it is so, for a fact. Indi vidually, the writer hereof is known as a"homc-body,"and was belabored by a business friend one day for a reason why he didn't travel more get away from home. "Haven't time," was the reply, and knowing that our interlocutor was exceeding ly rushed with business, wc made the inquiry how it was that he could get lime to go away. He replied that if be should wait until he would get time, his lime would never come ; so, he just picked up, aud left. And that is about the situation of every Nebraska man or woman who amounts to anything. However good an excuse this may or may not be for not visiting or writing to old friends in the cast, we must be allowed to say that many prefer sending their local newspa per back to the old home, as a regu lar visitor, thereby answering a thousand inquiries. We hereby give notice to all the Jacob Judds in Central Nebraska that wc shall sue out an injunction against their continued silence. They have no business to keep themselves to themselves. Every good neigh borhood should make itself heard, at least occasionally, in the local news paper. Rvpuliiicau County Conven tion.
