and in the aggregate value of live stock

wheat this year under republican pros
perity than they did in 1896 under
democratic depression This year the
people can afford to buy bread In 1696
thousands of them were starving and
begging for bread
The American farmers received 346

corn crop than they did in 1S9G

more money for their cotton thnn they
did in 1896 This year the mills were
open and there was a demand for cot

Glass manufacturing has become
one of the leading industries of the
middle west nud gives employment to
thousands of workmen in Indiana Illi
nois Missouri and other states
One of America patriotic citizens
Thomas S Obear of St Louis be
lieves it to be the duty of all citizens
who have the interest and welfare of
our country nt heart to lend what aid
they can to reelect our president
Mr Obenr is president of the Obear
Xester Glass company and a large em
ployer of labor He speaks to the
wage earners nnd to the farmers who
supply them with food and the mate
rials for clothing as follows
We wish to slate that after the
passage of the Wilson tariif bill un
der the democratic administration we
were compelled to reduce the wages
of our skilled workmen reducing their
wages twice making n reduction to
them of nine nnd 15 per cent accord
ing to the class of work they per
formed it was very hard for us to
keep our works in operation and we
were only enabled to do so by such
reduction nnd by working very hard
to dispose of our product On ma
terials that we purchased prices de
clined to the lowest we had ever heard
of declining in some instances 25 and
30 per cent
Since the McKinley administration
we have been enabled to increase our
product by doubling the capacity of
our plant We have ndvnneed the wages
of our skilled workmen twice paying
them now the highest wages ever paid
them with exception of on one class
of work paying them five per cent
less than the highest wages paid them
Our sales last season were 50 per cent
g eater thnn any previous year The
price of mnterials that enter into the
manufacture of our product includ
ing fuel has advanced 10 to 40 per
cent The price of our product owing
to new methods of manufacturing
notwithstanding the Increased cost of
production has advanced only from
five to ten per cent to the consumer
We commenced business in 1S91
and of course each year would eIiow
on enlarged business for the first few
years You will notice thnt since the
McKinley administration got into good
working order and the Dlngley tarilT
bill was passed there has been a large
inn ease each year in both skilled nnd
unskilled labor During the year end
ed September 1 1900 wo paid out in
wages nut including oflice salaries a
total amount of 10050750 against

of our ousiness under the democratic

Mr Obears statement is typical of
the glass business all over the coun
try It is conditions like these which
have induced the president of the
Green Glass association a workingninn
and democrnt to declare openly for the
reelection of Mr McKinley
The purchasing power of the glass
workers is fully 60 per cent greater
than in the democratic days of 1894 anil
1895 The direct result is not only
that these workers are saving money
but thnt they are buying more from
the agricultural classes than ever be
fore In the history of the country

through government by injunction
the precise thing which he and his
party denounce
If anyone should venture to infringe
on Bryans monopoly and reprint bis
book an injunction would bu clapped
on the infringer forthwith
Manufacturers have no such protec
tion as that
In the seeond place Bryans pro
tection is unlimited whereas manu
facturers are only protected up to a
certain point If a manufacturer
raises his price beyond the level cov
ered by the tariff duty tho foreign
article at once comes lu und competes
ngainst him
Not so with Bryans copyrighted
hook Let him charge what he pleases
there is still no competition He can
demand any price and the buyer has
no choice but to pay it or go without
the book
It is right that authors should have
this special protection nnd bo shield
ed by injunction The shame Is that
William J Bryan in the full enjoy
ment of such protection and getting
rich by it should go around the coun
try demanding thai protection be
taken away from other people nnd de
nouncing the very process which la
the only adequate defense of hi copy
