It is frequently assumed that whero
soil shows surlaco incrustations of alka
li salts it is valueless for agriculture
purposes This is shown not to be the
case by some experiments made by the
Wyoming government experiment
station There are however few plants
so alkali proof as to flourish uudor
these conditions Iucruatatiou of ordi
nary white alkali on the surface is
usually marked at least during dry
weather where there is aa much as 1 or
2 per cent of salts in tho top two inches
of soil Such an amount of salts will
prevent the growth of any of tho cereals
or of alfalfa Barley or rye Soem to
stand more alkali than wheat or oatp
In tho germination of seeds it was
found that the influence of small amounts
of alkali hastens sprouting and also
assists in thu life of the plant either
stimulating grouth or acting directly as
plant foul It did not appoar that any
ot the sidts except common soda exeited
directly poisonous or corrosive effects
on the seeds Tho injury uppearcd
duo to tho fact that the salts in solution
interfered with tho absorption by the

A RACING MEET
Local llornxiiii ii llopo In lli Onu Urn
Second 11 1ili In Octolmr
A number of local horsemen are work
ing energetically to arrange for a racing
meet on the fair ground track during
the second week in October They Mu
shier that at that time they can in
dueo a large number of horsemen to
bring their animals here and enter them
The horses ate now at Wayne and net
week will beat Ponca so that at the
time proposed for the Norfolk races
th y will be on their way homo and tho
owneis will be pleased to outer them
for a few races onrouto
There ate a number of fast horses in
the territory tributary to Norfolk that
local horsemen are anxious to see en
tered together for a race and it is proba
ble that they will be secured for this
meet They are Billionaire owned
by A 1 Durland of this city Jo Go
property of Mr ulnuf of Pierce Min
nie D owner Til Waller of Madison
Nebraska Burbou owned by Jim Waller
of Pierce W O Halls Burt wood of
this city fluid perhaps Una V of Albion
With these horses entered an interest
ing trot and pacing lace is assured
There may bo other entries in this race
but tho tlrst five are practically certain
For a running race they propose to
have a half mile and repeat in which
they hope to secure Fostonic and Bill L
as two of tho entries A gray Minne
sota horse is now here waiting for tho
race nud it is expected that a number of
other entries may be secured
For onoof thouttractionsit is expected
there will be a Roman hippodrome race
in which one man will ride four horstsi
i nulling nbieast and it is piesunied this
will prove very interesting
The prnmotoiH of the event also hope
to arrange for a bicycle race in which a
number of desirable prizes will beolleied
and many entries secured
D T Jones the les eo of thu track
is putting considerable woik on it to
place it in good shape for thu expected
meet
A committee is now out soliciting lor
funds to be offered as purses and has
been mooting with very fair encourage
ment Merchants should give this more
than passing notice as it oilers a day of
sport that will draw people hero from a
considerable distance and as Not folk
has offered no especial day of amuse
ment this year this should bo made a
success It is hoped that if this meet is
accorded duo encouragement and if it
proves satisfactory to horsemen and
others who attend arrangements may be
made for a more pretentious affair next
year
