WEATHER FORECASTS
Tho Department Not So SciceoHHful lately
iih Illclcx rieiity of Incitement for tlio
Kent of the Mouth
From Saturdays Daily
The fair weather signal was displayed
yesterday morning but before night it
raiued That is abont as close as tho
now man at Chicago who is running
tho weather business has come to strik
ing it for n week Speaking of weather
forecasts the Rev Irl Hicks is anything
but a cheerful prophet but it must bo
admitted that ho has guessed pretty
close tho mark thus far this mouth
Here is what ho said of the first half of
June
Juuo brings to us tho solstice point in
our orbit orouud tho suit and deserves
a more oxtouded explanation and fore
casts than wo have space to attempt
There are several astronomical causes
bearing on Juuo this year that promise
to mnko its storms and other phenomena
exceptional From tho Urd to Oth look
for high temperature and many storms
progressively from western to eastern
extremes A Venus equinox is central
on the 7th and will bo a dominating in
fluence iu all tho first half of June
Much lightning and thunder may bo ex
pected From flth to 12th is an active
timo of rnin and storms Cooler spoils
will follow stonns of raiu hail aud
thunder
Ho hasnt missed it very much yet as
will bo seen upon reviewing the condi
tions for tho past two weeks Tho re
mainder of June is not goiug to be so
charming either according to tho same
Eourco of information who finishes up
tho month in this manner
Thn 15th to JSth is anothor marked
storm poriod Consult your barometer
aud watch the clouds AlanyJJelectrical
displays from 21st to 2 1th with heavy
rains and wind Tho 2ilth to liOth is
tho last regular storm period Be on
tho watch for frequent and heavy
showers throughout thejjmonth
A Weullier Man Observation
U G Pursell tho weather observer
at Sioux Ciy ou Tuesday visited the
scene of the instructive tornndo which
passed near Salix Iowa on Sunday
Tho following report of his observations
is printed in the Journal The center
of tho funnel seems to have passed di
rectly over tho Hassel homo which was
picked up bodily aud carried away
Tho Malloy homo judging from tho way
things havo boon left was at tho right
hand edgo of tho tornado and tho Ber
nard and ONeill homes wero struck by
tho left hand edgo of it
Tho greater part of the dobris was
dropped about half a mile from tho Mai
loy Hassell neighborhood That seemed
to be tho end of tho swath At tho edges
of tho swath there was left moro than in
tho center of it whero tho suction was
terrific
Aud by tho way tho auction of that
tornado or any of its follows is enormous
Talk about falling ou tho ground to es
capo a storm like that Why tho suction
at tho center is great enough to pull tho
bark off from young trees and it would
burst tho skin of n human being A
man with fifty times ordinary human
strength could not hold himself down if
the tornado said come
In my opinion tho real course of the
storm was from tho southwest to tho
northeast I had neve bofore seen the
rnin track of a twister but it was so like
tho descriptions of all tho others which
I havo read that I thought that I had
seen it beforo
