first of the week after freight.
A. O. Coleman of McCann was
in Valentine Tuesday.
W. M. Shelbourne from Har
mony was in town Tuesday ,

M. Christensen spent several
days in Omaha the past week.
A daughter was born Sunday to
Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Goodrich of

Dr. Edgar and wife from south
west of town were in shopping

Vivian Clarkson came up from
Thacher Monday evening to .at
tend a meeting of the Degree of
Honor.
On Sunday next there will be
services in St. John's church , both
morning and evening. Choir re
hearsal on Saturday evening at

Dr. and Mrs. Compton left for
Honey Grove , Texas , Monday
night. This is Dr. Compton's old
home. They will be away about
three weeks.

guests of J. A. Scott at Ft. Nio-
brara Sunday.
Miss Ruth Stetter , who is in a
sanitarium in the Catskill moun
tains , New York state , is regain
ing her usual health. She will be
home in the spring.

went up to Henry Sauerwein's
near Crookston. Mr. Siuerwein
is convalescing from pneumonia
and is now able to sit up ,
Tom Van Buren and John Neiss
returned last Friday from Sturgis ,
S. D. , where they were subpoeau-
ed on a cattle case. The case was
not prosecuted and the three sus
pects were given their liberty.
Mrs. Charles Kalkofen , who has
been visiting her sister , Mrs. Bur
ton Brackett , received word that
her husband was sick and went to
her home in Kilgore Saturday.
Ja-nes Breuklander , her nephew ,
accompanied her.
Word has been received by Mr.
and Mrs. D. E. Sherman announ
cing the arrival of a son Friday
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. J.
McClelland of Fullerton. Mrs.
McClelland was formerly Miss
Elsie Sherman of Valentine.

Miss Edith S. Doty and Frank
A. Freel were united in marriage
Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock by
Rev. Haislup at the Methodist
parsonage. They left for their
new home near Lake , Tuesday ,
where the groom has a homestead.
Mrs. S. E. Doty accompanied
them to Valentine. The many
friends of this young couple wish

them much happiness and pros
perity.
George Hiller committed suicide
at Hot Springs on Dec. 4. Wor
ry over the loss of § 16,000 in a
stone quarry is the reason given
for him taking his own life. Mr.
Hiller lived in Valentine several
years ago and from here moved
to Gordon and other towns west
of here and finally settled in Hot.
Springs. Mr. Hiller was about
58 .years old and had many friends.
J. G. Stetter went to Hot Springs
Tuesday to attend the funeral
which was held on Wednesday ,
the Odd Fellows conducting the
services.

uable horses in the stock fields re
cently.

were Valentine callers the last of
the week.

Charles Borland passed through
here enroute to Tripp county the
first of the week. Charles has
been at Crofton , Nebr. , for some

Mr. Peterson of Arabia picked
up most everything for sale the
past few weeks and now he will
bring his hound and clean out the
coyotes. Come on we'll help ex
tend the welcome.
The farmers of this vicinity
greatly appreciate the work the
commissioners are having done on
big Sandy near the county seat.
A few loads of straw and waste
material help to improve this part
of a long road especially for the
tired teams.
An automobile passed through
this locality on the 5th of the
month going eastward and a num
ber of people estimate its SQsed at
from 55 to 60 miles per hour. It
could be heard for a "distance of
four miles. A number of teams
were scared and people were
dodging in here and there to stop
their teams from running away ,
