seat will be at Cody , Nebraska
in the extreme north edge of tin
county.

because if , they can secure this
territory it will place their count.y
seat in the center of their counties
and give them three-fourths more
territory than they now have.
Look here Voters if it is so nice
and cheap to run a small count.y
with the county seat at one side ,
why do "Hooker and Grant wish tc
enlarge their counties ? Sure the. ?
wish to enlarge their counties thus
gaining more taxable property
and enabling them to pay more
competent salaries to the county
officials and also enabling them tc
meet the demand of other county
expenses.
Here a few years ago the people
in the southern part of the county
wanted to be annexed to Hooker
and Grant counties. They brought
it before the voters of Cherry
county and what did Cody and
Merriman do for them ? Look
over the returns of the election and
you will not find a single vote cast
for it , and there are lots of voters
in the southern part of the county
that are going to return the com
pliment.
That truly remarkable county
divisionist , The Cody Cow Boy ,
in his issue of October 13th takes
as one of his subjects of discussion
on county division the schools of
Cherry county. If he will take
the trouble to investigate he will
find that Cherry county ranks
among the highest in the state oi
Nebraska in educational work ;
there are as few children in Cher
ry county over the age of six
years who have not attended school
six months in the year and there
are as few pupils over sixteen
years of age who have not passed
the eighth grade examination as
can be found in any other county
in the state of Nebraska. Is this
educational work a disgrace tc
" , B5g Cherry" No , certainly no
disgrace , it's the highest- honor
bestowed upon a county ; and what
is the reason Cherry county now
has this honor in the educational
world ? Is it because the pupils
are more intelligent than in other
counties , or is it due to the com
petent county superintendents of
Cherry county Ihe one holding the
office at present as well as those
who held it before her whohave ,
and now exercise good control
over their teachers and schoolsl
In the same issue he states that it
costs ten dollars per vote in cer
tain precincts ; that , I think is true
but it'isn't altogether the fault of
the county. If the voters ar ef A , not
patriotic enough to attend1 the
election and cast their vote , it is
no ones business except their own ,
and it costs just as much to hold
election and have five votes cast
as it. does if a hundred votes are
cast. I do not think it will cost
ten dollars per vote this fall b.v
the way the voters are talking oi
turning out to vote against county
division.

Mr. and Mrs. Wra. Ballard re
turned from Omaha last weak and
visited friends here before going
to their home near Wood Lake.

for some time having her eyes
treated.
Ralph Keplinger is visiting his
mother and many friends in Val
entine. Mr. Keplinger at one
time was an operator at the depot

White-faced steers are bringing
nearly a dollar a hundred more on
the market than any other steers.

home near Rd Dear lake Sunday.
They were neighbors in Iowa.

pathy for those who mourn his
loss and bow to the inevitable.
