Dock Grooms has been taking
Mr. Hilsinger's place as night
marshal the past week , while

calling the congregation together
for services.
The Sunday morning service at
the Presbyterian church will be a
memorial service to the deceased
son of Dr. J. M. Caldwell and
wife who recently died of paraly
sis in Australia.
Capt. Laufer came down from
Irwin precinct last week with the
election returns and went from
here to Kirksville , Mo. * to visit a
sister vho is ill and whom he has
not seen for 43 years.
Nels. Rowley had a severe at
tack of heart trouble last Saturday
morning while in town loading
some wagons. Hot applications
restored him , though he suffered
severe pains for two or three
hours. The attack was probablj
brought on by a cold and the
sharpness of the morning air. He
was down town during the afternoon -

noon , walking around as usual bul
realize'd that he had had -a serious
attack and began doctoring.

tal where he expects to have an
operation performed for a fistuls

Mr , Bartlett is an old soldiei
who came out last spring from St.
Joe 'and took a homestead ten
miles south of town. He's look
ing for his wife and daughter in a
few days and will live in town un
til next spring.
James Quigley has completed
his hot water heating plant and
.the family is enjoying the even
temperature all over the house
that makes one think of velvet as
the descriptive word for the even
ness and softness of the heat ,

Mr. and Mrs. Headfngton re
turned from their honeymoon and
visit with ' ( relatives in the east ,
and last Saturday went to their
home south of Woodlake. Mrs.
Headington spent several days in
Valentine while Mr. Headington
went out to the ranch to get a cosy
home prepared for their use.

Richard Grooms came in Mon
day night for a few days visit with
relatives 'and old friends and
neighbors. He lives in < Ea Junta ,

City and got a return ticket , and
slipped up here for a visit between
trips. Dick left his family taking
care of themselves. The.girl , he
says , is nearly as tall as he and
weighs 150 pounds , and the oldest
boy nearly a man. He has two
teams and does all kinds of work ,
feeds alfalfa , and says the land

around La-Junta is all irrigated
from the Arkansas river , which
flows through the town. Land is
worth § 250'to $275 per acre , and
alfalfa is the principal crop , the
