I ® IT'S DOWN
The old water tank crashed to :
the ground last Sunday evening at i
10:35. : It had been in a dangerous
condition for several weeks and
the crash was daily expected. Each
morning for the past month our
eyes would inadvertently turn to
' see if the tower was still there and
'I our thoughts often turned to the
I "Star Spangled Banner" and the
manner in which it came to . . .be .
written , the anxiety of our citizens
being something of a comparison
in their anxious solicitation that
the old crumbling tank should be
lowered without danger to life or
loss from violent wreckage. For
I several weeks the old tower has
been turning , twisting and lean-
ing , The timbers could be seen to
be rotten at the joints and the bra-
ces were breaking loose , s parat-
ing from their places , and the old
tower was groaning under the
heavy weight during each hard
wind in which it was feared that
the crash would come. Some who
were least interested may have
carelessly predicted that it would
stand a year : or two years yet but
-
any one with common sense who
cared , knew better. The tower fell
out across Main street , piling up
10 to 12 feet high of broken tim-
bers , and people wondered where
they all came from. The tank
seems to have burst from its un
even position as the tower began
to tumble and the water spread in
all directions , rushing in a Johns
town torrent to find level , washing
dirt away from a hard street ten to
twelve inches in depth , swept
away Jennings coal shed , pushed
his photo gallery off the founda-
tion an inch at the west end , also
some boards were caved in by
timbers striking it either in the
falling or the slushing of the water
or both. -
Capt. Shaw's building , standing
to the south and almost under the
huge water tank , was caved in at
the sky light by falling timbers
and the rushing water and moved
to the south- nine inches off the
foundation at the west end and
about three feet to the south at the
east end , terribly smashing the
sides of the building from the fal
ling' timbers , though no timbers
fell across the building.
Perhaps through the splendid
management of our town board
that the tower fell westward into
Main street at time when
a every-
body was off the street.
The damage to Capt. Shaw's
building and contents that the city
will have to pay , , will amount to
many times what it would have
cost to take the tower and tank
down.
It was due to the good manage-
ment of the city board that no one
was killed in the wreck , if any one
wishes to believe this way to ex-
cuse them for criminal reckless-
ness and carelessness and the ad-
ditional costs of this blunder will
be taxed up andt paid cheerfully
for the privilege of having these
gallant fellows on the board.
How about a house cleaning
next spring ? ?
The Indians camped southeast
of town must have partaken too
copiously of "spirits" Sunday
night for they indulged in a jubi
lee that lasted from about 9 o'clock
till the water tank "moved"when
.
they gave one curdling yelp and
took to their tepees , perhaps in
wonderment of what kind of jug-
gernaut their pale face brothers
had now set in motion to subdue
thorn.

A HAPPY SURPRISE
Last Friday evening was the oc
casion of one of the most enjoya
ble social affairs held in Valentine
for a long while , the event having
been a nicely planned and splen-
didly carried out surprise , by the
members of the bible class of the
Presbyterian : church , in honor of
their esteemed leader , Mrs. Dr.
Daily , on the eve of leave taking
from this community for her new
home in Arkansas.
The affair was held at the home
of Col. and Mrs. Tracewell , and
was a "go" in every particular.
About seventy persons mem-
bers of the class : and friends , were .
gathered together to bid Mrs.
Daily farewell , and the atmosphere
of genuine good will and fellow-
ship that attended throughout the
evening left no doubt that every
one was happy and glad to be there.
A bountiful repast was served ,
to which all did ample justice.
No nicer testimonial of apprecia-
tion of the good things that bur-
dened the festive board could pos-
sibly have been expressed than the
manner in which everybody feast-
ed. The hostess and her assistants
certainly did themselves proud.
After the inner man had been
provided for Rev. Caldwell , in
behalf of the bible class , made a
few appropriate , feeling remarks ,
and presented the guest of honor
with a beautiful morocco bound
set of HTl'a valogues , " in ten vol-
I
umes , written by Holmes , and was
gracefully accepted in tender
words of appreciation by Mrs.
Daily. Short talks were then
made , by various ones , the remarks
contributed by Rev. Caldwell es
pecially being in a happy vein and
elicited much laughter and mirth.
He told of his fanciful dream of
fifteen years hence (1925) ( ) in which
he had seen Dr. and Mrs. Daily
again in our midst , Valentine a
great mart of trade with sky scrap-
ers , paved streets , electric cars ,
beautiful parks , etc. , and all their
old friends gathered together for
a joyful home coming feast.
Vocal and instrumental music
added much to the pleasure of all.
It was well on to the mid-night
hour when the guests withdrew
to their homes with fond farewells
and cheering words to Mrs. Daily
in whom they had found a splen-
did neighbor , a constant friend ,
who had been a help and comfort
and inspiration to them and they
wanted to express their feelings
of regard while she was here to
hear them-believing as Lewis
Merriman used to say , "Do not
keep the alabaster boxes of your
love and tenderness sealed up un-
til your friends are gone. Fill
their lives with sweetness. Speak
approving words while their ears
can yet hear and their hearts can
be thrilled and made happier by
them. "
Mrs. Daily has been the leader
of the bible class for some years
and her departure is deeply re
gretted by every member of that
band of appreciative students of i
God's word. She has been a faith-
ful leader , devoting her time large-
ly to the spiritual uplift of the
class , and her influence for good
in the church as well as in the com-
munity at large is attested by all
who know her.
I .
The Ladies' Aid also remem
bered Mrs. Daily with a , nice little I
token of their love and esteem-a
handsome hand painted china plate
and souvenir spoon.
