But this ques- tion became an issue in the dem- ocratic party before Mr. Bryan spoke out upon it. When I ve- . toed the "Fort Crook Bill" and signed "Daylight . Saloon Bill" in the face of threats that ] wrote my own political death warrant if 1 approved that measure , the democratic party had this issue put before it. As in other mat- ters I have been compelled to de- cide since I have been Governor of the State , I acted , first , upon my own judgement and conscience as to what I believed was right and for the best interests-- the people of the State , and , secondly , , I for the good of my party. The : I moment I signed the "Daylight I Saloon Bill , " the organized liquor I interests of this State decreed I must be beaten at the next elec- tion. The first battle will be at 1 the coming primary. 1 received more votes when I1 / was elected than any other canI I didate ever received -Nebraska ] for any office , except President j Boosevelc the campaign of 190i' ' < I \ - . . . " . - - ' " . ' - . and by all the rules of Nebraska ' politics I : was entitled to a reinom- inatiion without astruggle. May or Dahlman has been brought out to defeat me. . If he can do it my defeat will be a warning to all fu- ture politicians in Nebraska to never dare to stand up against the liquor interests. The issue between democracy and decency upon one hand and the lawless liberty of unbridled license upon the other is clearly understood by the people of Ne- braska , and I am ready to meet the fight along this line. The peo- ple of this state are the most inde- pendent and intelligent voters of those of any state of which I have knowledge. The petty jealousies and strifes of contending politi- cians , who are struggling for par - ty control etc. , will cut but little figure. A great many more Nebraskans will always ; be upon the side of the right than upon the side of wrong , but the issue can- not be fogged nor turned aside/ He that is not for me is against me. I propose to go on fighting as long as I hold my < office , to maintain an administration that shall win the support of the peo- ple of this state irrespective of par- ty if I can , to convince them that good government and dem ocratic success go hand in hand. I am a Nebraskan before I am a democrat , but as a member of that party and one who has al- ways contended for its right to rule in this state , I shall continue to strive to fight for those things that I think are essential to good government and to strengthen the party in every way possible , not divide it upon questions that are not vital but to unite it upon great principles such as direct legislation , which carries with it i the satisfactory solution of coun- i ty option ' and many other ques tions more important still. What is needed in this state just at present is the decent respect and observance of laws already upon the statute books concerning the liquor traffic , and this office is i chiefly concerned with the en- forcement of the law. I am will- ing to leave to the democratic par- ty in its state convention to de- termine what the future policy of the party shall be in the matter of making new laws. IN MEMORIAM. In Greenwood cemetery , N. Y. marking the grave of a scholar cut off in his prime , stands a unique monument. It represents a tree broken midway , with the inscrip- tion "My plans were broken off. " Such might appropriately be in- scribed upon the grave of J. A. Copeland , who died at the hospi tal at Montrose , Colorado , on June 23 , of typhoid fever. He was born in Fayette county , Iowa , November 15 , 1879. He was married irr 1906 to Miss lin- nie Dickson , of Custer , So. Dak. , and began the making of a home in the beautiful valley of the Dis- appointment. We can picture the hope , the plans , for upbuild ing of a home , the varying toil and rest through peace and plenty and naught but "love was law. " But these plans were broken off. the young wife sickened asd died , the sunshine and song went out of his life forever. Hiding his heart wound , he bravely took up life's battle , and worked and planned to develop and water the desert acres. Expensive machinery had been or- dered and plans made for years of consecutive work but the death angel laid his hand upon him and his plans were broken off. He was laid by the side of his wife in Norwood cemetery , June 27 , 1910. Thank God , the meanest of earth's creatures boasts of two soul sides , one to face the world with , one to show a woman when he loves her. The great , busy selfish world saw not the soul side-those he loved saw. Saw not the patience the tenderness , the constancy. Compared with men of coarser fiber , aggressive and self seeking , his gentleness and purity of bpeech may have been construed'as timid- ity. But not so , he was. tenaci- ous of purpose , if he but once . / , - - 4. - , - JJ1L. . pq marked out the course of duty. Those that knew him best loved him most. The soldier in the j trenches sings of Annie Laurie , but bravely faces death. No won- . der the poet sings , "The bravest are the tenderest , the loving are the daring. " And thus our modest friend could look with unfaltering eye into the dark unknown and die with his hand clasped' in one he lo\red.-A friend , in Siebert , Col. , Settler.
