The question of what disposition
shall be made of the sand bills should
not be overlooked It is government
land and should remain ho until al1
land suitable for homesteads is taken
The policies of the republican party
have been to dispose of the public do
main too fast and the- party has used
the public lands for their political wel
fare as a lever to secure the vote of the
unsuspecting for measure w bieh could
never be carried without appealing to
the voters who are blinded by the gen
erosity in disposing of lauds in which
they reap a benefit Perhaps some of
the oldei people remember the wildcat
schemes in which from 1836 to 40
nearly everyone expected 10 make a
fortune in one way or another Hut
there cane a time in which specie pay
ments were suspended and thousands
of persons went broke We charge the
republican party with being a spend
thrift of national resources forcing is
sues to the detriment of the masses of
people parceling and dividing the pub
lic domain as plunder It is not need
ed by the people who obtain it in most
circumstances but compelling others
to reach beyond themselves before it is
necessary to make sure that they are
not beaten out of their rights gives
rise to borrowing of capital and man
are thus bankrupted by some misfor
tune that otherwise would rot have
been possible If the plan is to divide
tne public domain as plunder then we
insist en an equal division and let it be
done at once otherwise let it remain a
it is for coming generations But in no
wise fchuuld it be apportione to men
in proportion to the property they al
roady possess as the common theory
exists at present that whoever owns
the hay lands they are entitled to the

tlie common people will have much
cause to regret having re elected Alu

was elected since the capitalists represent

Under guise of a protective tan it
many of our laboring men are deceived
No protective tann bill was ever
framed for them Tariff laws are
claimed to raise the price of labor and
upon that plea the corporations go to
the laboring man for hiaote iantt
laws enable the mauuiactuer to get a
higher price to the extent ol the tarili

publican newsp per that is honest
enough to admit the truth and despise
crookedness
From the standpoint of political mo-
rality the result of the election will not
tend to encourage those ambitious for -public
honors with the behet that the
road to success lies in the direction of
independent honesty and integrity but
rather through ability to swiug
