Our road overseer has been very
busy the last two weeks grading up
the streets of Valentine and hammer
ing up rock Our streets are now in
very fair condition and with reason
able care can be kept so
J H Quigley returned from the
national and state conventions last
week having stopped in Lincoln
awhile on business connected with the
State Brand Commission Monday
he went up to his ranch for a few days
to look after his stock interests
Flora Clarkson the little daughter
of Will Clarkson fell off a spring
wagon Tuesday while playing and
broke her arm Dr Holsclaw set the
broken member and the little one is
doing fairly well Flora has the sym
pathy of every one and it is hoped
that she will speedily recover the use
of her arm which is yery painful at
the present time and will be for a few
days

For Cattle Stealing
E D Cohotathe Chinese ex soldier
who has made his home between this
city and Fort Niobrara near the
bridge was arrested and taken before
Judge Towne last week on the charge
of stealing cattle He was bound
over to the District court and in lieu
of bond for appearance he is in the
custody of the sheriff Judge Tucker
and son John M Tucker will defend
the case and County Attorney Mor
rissey will conduct the prosecution
Mr Cohota has served 30 years in
the United States army and has been
on the retired list for some time
Nearly two years ago his wife died
leaving him with a family of small
children the youngest being an in
fant which was taken to the Orphans
home where it died shortly afterward
Two more are in the Orphanage arid
two are in the family of Charles

There has been an abundance of
rain since the 4th of July and crops
of ail kinds are doing- well The
range is good the cattle are fat the
young stock is growing and the far
mers stay at home as much as pos
sible to keep the weeds down and al-
low the corn to grow Quite different
from last year when the pastures
were dry enough to burn The people
who left Cherry county last year are
now wishing they were back
