On Tuesday April 21 The West
ern News Democrat was sold by the
present proprietor to Mr I M Kice
possession to be given on the first of
May The paper will continue to ad
vocate the principles and support the
candidates of the fusion parties and
Ave bespeak for the new owner the same
measure of patronage that has been
given to the old one All back sub
scription and all accounts due the pa
per on the 1st of May are the property
of Robert Good and will be collected
and receipted for by him Now is the
time to pay up
Four years ago the first of April the
writer came to Valentine with no
money no friends and no reputation
and purchased the Cherry County Inde
pendent which was then the poorest
paper along the Elkhorn road poor
both in finance and prospects With a
courage inspired by the cause he has
ever since represented the cause of the
great common people he took up the
work of running a democratic newspa
per regardless of the smiles of those
who had seen editor after editor come
and go Ayithout making a success of the
paper and the sneers and ill concealed
hatred of those who feared opposition
From its beginning The Valentine
Democrat was a success and its suc
cess and incorruptibility caused the en
vious to lay plans for its utter annihil
ation and a third paper was started
The writer was a young man and this
opposition worried himbut he never fal
tered in the path he had marked out
for himself and in spite of the oppo
sition he continued to make friends
Finally an election occurred and it was
found that the opposition had defeated
the very thing they were supposed to
be working for and to forestall any
further disasters the Western News
was purchased and from the union of
the two papers the Western News
Democrat was born This occurred a
year ago last fall and the paper has con
tinued to grow in popularity and influ
ence and circulation ever since much
to the chagrin of those who four years
ago predicted its utter failure Today
it is looking better and paying more
money than at any time in its life which
extends over 15 years So much for
history
Three years ago this moDth the
writer married Almost from the first
his wifes health was affected by the
quality of the water here and under
the adyice of medical authorities it was
deemed advisable to make a change
A new man was wanted at Ainswoith
and the writer last week went down
and purchased a partnership in the
