Argentine Cattle Barred
An order has just been issued by the
authorities of Great Britain forbidding
the admission of South American live
stock into the British islands For a
long time it is said the prevalence of
the foot and mouth disease in England
has caused a great deal of uneasiness
and the claim is made that it has been
imported from Argentine hence the
order of the privy council now issued
forbidding the admission of South
American cattle and sheep into the in
terior At the same time it is also true
that the competition of live stock from
that quarter has long been considered a
great hardship and the embargo on
live cattle and sheep is just as likely to
be due to that cause as to a fear of
a disease The treatment of our own
cattle under a pretense that they have
pleuro pneumonia illustrates this and
the embargo having been laid on South
American live stock it will probably
continue forever For twenty years
the cattle of this country have been de
nied admission to Great Britain al
though whafever slight justification for
the original prohibition there may at
one time have been has long since dis
appeared For a shorter time Cana
dian cattle have also been barred for
reasons that do not exist now if they
ever did and yet neither this country
nor Canada can get the embargo re
moved and have in fact quit trying
having come to recognize the futility of
attempting to get Great Britain to un
do an injustice that she has once made
up her mind to commit The new or
der against South American cattle is
regarded as of considerable importance
to the cattle industry in this country
and in Canada as it is likely to lessen
South American competition or at
least to subject it to the same restric
tions that the trade of the United States
and Canada are subjected to Home
stead
S D Stock Association Meeting
The meetings of the South Jjakota
Stock Association at Rapid City last
week is reported to have been a great
success iso work of importance was
done at the meeting except to provide
for inspection of cattle belonging to
membex s of the Keya Paha River asso
ciation The total membership is now
about 600 of these 150 being new
members The report of the secretary
shows that during the jear past there
was recovered at Chicago South Oma
ha and Sioux City a total of 5479 head
of -cattle woith 240000 The report
of the secretary contains these interest
ing statements f
The change in conditions that has
made the stockman prosperous lias also
stimulated the rustler to take greater
and more desperate chances in the
stealing of stock from the range The
risk taken in the theft of a 20 calf
or a 40 horse is no greater than when
these animals were not ready sale at
much over one half these prices while
if successful the pecuniary result is
doubled More cases of rustling
have been reported yn the past eight
months than at any time since this or
ganization was formed
Keya Paha River Association Meets
From the minutes of the last meeting
of the Keya Paha River Stock Associ
ation we learn that the association de
cided that the executive committee pro
vide for inspection at the various mar
ket points and to provide a fund for
the payment of the necessary expenses
by a sufficient levy per head on all cat
tle horses mules and asses owned or
controlled by members of the associ
ation
Mr J W Flannigan was elected a
delegate to attend the annual meeting
of the Western South Dakota Stock
Growers Association to be held a1
Rapid City S D April 10 1900 for
the purpose of negotiating for inspec
tion through that association

Sioux City is a swift tovn but it is
setting most too fast a pace when it
turns a woman stock solicitor on the
road to catch the guileless stockman
Iler name is Mrs Ollie Nortblane and
it is said that she gets many a consign
ment for her firm which men have been
unable to secure Her judgment in
stock matters is exceptionally good and
the selection of a bunch of good steers
is as much a matter of business and
pleasure with her as the average woman
finds in the selection of a new spring
dress This combined with her tact
and rare ability in handling shippers
makes her services valuable
M D James was in town Wednes
day puachasing supplies for the James
Bros ranch thirty miles south of here
near Spragg P O Mr James who is
a breeder of registered Ilerefords only
attended the big Hereford cattle sale at
South Omaha on Friday and Saturday
At the sale he purchased for over three
hundred dollars a very fine eighteen
months old bull which will weigh 1400
pounds when in condition The ani
mal was shipped in Sunday and taken
to the ranch Longpine Journal
The Tribune is informed that a few
days travel through this section after
lost cattle by one of our citizens recent
ly led to the discovery that within two
weeks time 27 head of cattle had been

stolen from different parties within a
radius ol ten miles of Crawford Jbut
it about time that an organization was
effected here to bring those thieves to
justice and stop these depredations

Keports from Omaha are to the effect
that range horses are in demand One
commission llrm says it can use four to
six carloads per week but they must
be in good flesh and of good quality
Cheap horses are cheaper than ever
this year There is an active demand
for horses for the British cavalry but
they must be between 14 and 15 hands
high from 5 to 9 j ears old and bay
black or brown in color
Joe Strange of Sioux City has been
up on the reservation the past week or
two buying hides and this week ship
ped over two carloads of dry flints to
his house lie was very reticent le
garding the price paid but said it was
something like 15 cents Hides are
good property and we would adyise our
readers to study the market carefully
