lhe JSewv Democuat man has
been at great expense to consolidate
tne two papers which while working
for the same end never agreed on
methods thus hampering the cause
for which they labored In addition
to che expense incurred in buying the
Xews he has found it necessary to
purchase a new press in order to meet
the demands of the papers large cir
culation The paper must be enlarged
and improved but to do ail this re
quires money The papers subscrib
ers number about 1500 Some of these
are paid in advance many are in ar
rears from a few months to live years
To each individual subscriber the
amount owed is small but to the pa
per man it is a big item If each
subscriber owes a dollar the total is
sufficient to pay all the papers debts
and then some Think of this and
send the editor a dollar or two It is

Albert A Lynn sergeant in Co GM
12th U S Infantry returned from
Montauk Point Long Island Monday
morning He says that the condition
of the troops at Camp Wikoff is sim
ply awful and the soldiers are dying
by scores His company arrived at
the camp from Santiago 95 strong and
three days later but 12 men were able
to report for duty His description of
things is very realistic and he says the
people of the east are loudly denounc
ing the administratioa for its criminal
conduct of affairs Mr Lynn is a re
publican and his criticisms do not pro
ceed from political bias butare caused
by the facts asthey are Unless im
mediate steps are taken to remedy ex
isting evils this country will have to
answer for a disgrace by the sido of
which Andersodville was a heaven
At Merriman last Friday the popu
lists and democrats of the third com
missioner district met in convention
and without making a nomination ad
journed to meet ac the same place on
Saturday September 24 at which
time a full delegation from each pre
cinct in the district should be present
It is generally conceded that the fusion
nominee shall be a democrat hence
we would advise all the democratic
brethren to turn out and nominate a
good clean man There is much fine
commissioner timber among the demo
crats in that section of the countrv
and the conventions should have no
difficulty in selecting a man who will
satisfy the most exacting both regard
ing ability and political standing
The friends of reform should bear in
miad that the retiring commissiouer
hri made an enviable record as a
friend of economy and a foe to poor
business methods in our county govern
ment thus rellecting credit upon his
party and his successor should be
worthy of his place Once more we
urge all democrats and populists to
see that full delegations are present at
the conventions
