Pringle the man who burglarized
Ilothleutners store at Kilgore was put
in jail here last Saturday

hogs yesterday morning and sold them

yesterday between the Fort Xiobrara
Mascots and the Valentine Brownies
the latter defeated the former by a
score of 24 to 22
Rev O T Moore preaciied a base
ball sermon to the enthusiasts Sunday
evening which it is said abounded in
good advice to those who use the Sab
bath for the sport
Yesterday W A Parker of Wood
Lake bought the stock of dry goods
formerlv owned bv S II Kyner of
Longpine and C M Baily purchased
the grocery stock
A theates party from town attended
Carlton Lords show ai the post on
Tuesday night and they say the com
pany is a splendid one See them at
Cornell Hall tonight
At the school meeting next Monday
evening three members of the school
board will be elected two to serve
three years and one fur two years

T A Yearnshaw left yesterday for
Cody where he will go into business
for himself Tommy has made many
friends while in Valentine and we
predict the same fortune for him at
Cody
Frank Sageser of Bassett father of
our barber arrived in town Monday
night with his family and will make
this his future home having rented
the property formerly owned by Dr
Dwyer on Cherry street
The Co operative Gramophone Co
gave an exhibition at the Hall Monday
night It was the rankest fake that
ever struck the town but only a very
few were present to hear the alleged
entertainment- Butte Gazette
Martin Christensen is one of the
busiest men n the northwest He has
a contract to do painting at Fort Rob
inson one at St Francis Mission one
at Fort Niobiara and one at Santee
Agency to say nothing of smaller jobs
here and elsewhere
Messrs F E Jandt and P G
Cooper of Crawford were in town
Sunday on their return from Rosebud
where they had been on business Mr
Jandt went east Monday morning and
Mr Cooper returned home to Crawford

Monday another game was played
with a like result the score being 10
to 6 in favor of the local team at the
end of the seventh inning when the
game was called
Among the colored boys was Wra
Morris a member of E troop Ninth
cavalry who was thought to be a
pretty good foot racer so Clyde Ros
seter of Chadron was prevailed upon
to come here and a foot race was
matched for Monday afternoon The
officers at the post made a pool and
backed the colored man for 150 and

Last week we gave a full account
of the first days races and above will
be found a condensed history of the
sports of the week Cut it out and
save it for future reference The
time made in all races was most ex
cellent
The principal event of the second
day was the 600 yard dash won by
Wild Irishman The horses got off
well and the finish was pretty By
the way that Wild Irishman is a great
horse This is his first campaign and
he has a race at Hermosa July G which
promises to be a good one
The half mile and repeat was a good
race and Bill Days horse Glador
showed his heels to the other horses in
good stvle The foot race was not ex
citing Becker of Fort Niobrara win
ning easily
The county race brought out some
pretty good horses Tom Higgins

immense crowd turned out to see the
game which was a very poor one the
score by innings being

local sports went out to the post in the
afternoon and tried to bet on Ro3se
ter but the boys were simply bluffed
to a standstill They could have won
10U0 as easily as they won 150 had
they been willing to back their man
As it was the side bets probably
amounted to 100 After the ball
game the race was called and it did
nt take long for it to be over Mor
ris ran away from Rosseter from the
scratch and finished 10 or 15 feet in
advance of the Chadion man Time
in dispute one man catching it 10 1 5
and another 10 2 5 At any rate the
backers of Rosseter lost their money
and Clyde ackno wledges that he cant
run against the colored boy

started overland for Pierre Monday
with Sweetheart and Dr Briggs

with their hordes for their home at
Hermosa on Monday evenings frieght
These boys made lots of friends here

Pete The Doctor is quite a character
and is a splendid race horse man
The Chadron sports told us to re
mark that they are all dead broke
Hodge especially came in for a lot of
guying
Ed Clarke doesut intend running
his horse Otis II again although he
is a good one
An October race meeting at this
place would draw an immense crowd
from abroad

On April 19 aud theieabouts Valen
tine was honored with the presence
of one A L Morgan alias half a doz
en other names He was accompan
ied by a man who passed as his broth
er Morgan represented himself as a
cattle man from Billings Montana
and was a Mason in good standing
Using his fraternity as a cloak he
managed to obtain C R Watsons en
dorsement to a 50 check and also
bargained for a 75 outfit of saddles
from J W Yeast giving a 100 check
in payment therefor and receiving 25
in cash He went to Longpine
next day on business and has not been i
seen since The checks were returned
with word that no such person was
known there either by the bank or
Masonic lodge Word was at once
sent to the police and lodges in various
cities aud Saturday evening a telegram
trom Crawfordsville Indiana was re
ceived by Sheriff Strong staling that
Morgan was there The sheriff started
for the Hoosier town Saturday morn
ing and will soon be here with the
scoundrel
