THE VALENTINE DEMOCRAT WOOD LAKE DEPARTMENT
LeRoy Leach Editor
Wanted A little rain Anyone
observing any stray showers please
direct them this way
S G Barnes and wife left for
Ohio on Mondays passenger where
they will spend the summer
Peter Willen formerly a resident of
Wood -Lake came out last week from
Clay City Indiana for the purpose of
making final proof in support of his
tree claim near town He returned
Monday after a pleasent visit -with old
friends

Mrs J Lewis left for Blair Monday
for the purpose of superintending the
shipping of her household goods to

Our sheep ranchmen have commenc
ed shearing and expect a first class
wool harvest The best way to farm
in this country is to go into the sheep
business
As news items are fully as scarce as
honest men in the horse stealing busi
ness we will try to describe the humor
ous scenes to be seen While making a
pleasure trip through
THE SUNNY SOUTn
We lef t TVoodlake one chilly No
vember day with a benevolent and
expectant smile a heavy liBed storm
ulster and an unswerving determina
tion to thoroughly explore the tropical
depths of the balmy south TVe had a
pleasant trip down to Omaha stopped
a couple of places with our skates for
the purpose of giving the back of our
head a final crack on the last ice we
expected to observe for quite a period
after which incident we continued our
journey with happy thoughts and a
large lump immediately back of our
brain Arriving at Omaha we traded
our ulster for a light mackintosh and
next morning shot rapidly towards the
grasshoppeiy depths of cyclone Kan
sas where we observed a great number
of hungry people gathering what crop
the Gods had left them then a little
later entered the land of the cheerful
trainrobber and loquacious land agent
loving Missouri
Next morning we passed -through
Independence famous as the town
where Quantrall bought large quanti
ties of pistol caps in war time We
were anxious to closely observe this
most beautiful of Missouri burgs but
were much annoyed at the time by the
train newsboy who insisted at that
favorable moment in a voice of
thunder and indefatigable staying
qualities on selling us the latest edi
tion or the Life of Frank and Jesse-
James but though he had the nerve
of a book agent we purchased not
The trip and scenery south of St
Louis are something one can always
enjoy There are horse shoe curves in
the track every three miles clear to
the Arkansas line and as the train
winds its way swiftly down the grade
eight miles per hour one can step off
the car platform take a nap and
lnuch in the woods and still have am
ple time to walk across the curve and
board the train once more Now there
may be some lovely country in south
ern Missouri as the land agent would
have us believe but we were unable
to observe any on account of the
thick growth of scrubby timber
which covered the entire country
TVe will here remark however that
our trainmen on the F E M V are
not as accomodating as Missouri train
men are for in spite of the swift rate
at which trains are run they stop every
half mile in the woods to nick un
everyAunt Dinah and George Washing
ton who run out of the woods Truly
this is the personification of unselfish
ness and we would not be mean enough
to here describe the feelings of the
average passenger who is impatiently
and constantly asking the conductor
when in h do you expect to get
into Little Rock at this rate of speed
Indeed that were out of place here
After spending a week in Stuttgart
Arkansas we journey into the country
quail hunting and enjoyed ourselves
fully as much at the quails expense
as the mosquitoes do themselves at
ours and make a triumphant return
to the temperance city covered A with
cypress moss mud and mosquitoes
bites and wondering whether the
land agent who so glowingly described
the tropical glories of eastern
sris was7 nt seated on the peak of Mount
Blanc when he wrote such delusive
phantasies But at last we retire and
enjoy our sieep ureuiumg umn wc
have at last captured the long-looked-for
wood tick and put him to the tor
ture but alas it is but a dream we dis
cover two days later as we carry our
shoe in our hand to ease the spot where

house this week
