THE COLONELS SPEECH
A few years since a Colonel wan
dered over to our town from the north
expressly for the purpose of furnishing
the learned populace of Woodlake
with a free speech relative to the early
life of General Grant and made
arrangements to deliver it over the
counter of one of our busy stores on
the evening of the day on which he
arrived
The boys most of them ranchmen
conclude d that it would be real funny
to give the Colonel a warm reception
They accordingly proceeded while the
Colonel was at supper to swing up au
old skull to the ceiling directly above
where the Colonel must stand loaded
both barrels of a shot gun which they
placed beneath the counter with a
string to the triggers then having
provided themselves with fire crackers
croquet mallets together with some
large tin pans quietly awaited the
Colonel He soon came in and com
menced the following speech
Gentlemen General Grant was one
of the most remarkable men of our
time and- Bang went a large fire
cracker while the skull slid slowly
down in front of the Colonels nose
the ablest general named on the
pages of the worlds history contin
ued the unmoved Colonel Hi yi
yip yipl Boom fizz crack crack
crack crack came the applause at
the conclusion of the sentence
Gentleman continued the Col
onel we all know that without the
aid of General Grant the civil war
would never ha- Boom I boomf roared
the shot gun at this juncture while
with a yell of terror the Colonel leaped
the counter clear and made madly for
the door followed by a deafening roar
of tin cans six shooters and wild
western yells Having gained the
doorway the Colonels courage return
ed and as soon as the tumult had sub
sided he said Gentlemen I supposed
I was addressing a peaceable gather
ing not a crowd of Sioux Indians but
I see you do not appreciate my
oration so will add just this much
If I but possossed the muscle that I
had twenty years ago I could and
would thrash every man in the room
Good night allf So saying he dis
appeared while the boys looked at
each other silently
