One Quail Area To Close Dec. 1 LINCOLN The season on quail in the northern area will close Dec. 1, the Game Commis sion reports. Quail hunters have been hav ing good success this year, M. O. The northern area includes that portion of the state lying north of a line extending from the Iowa-Nebraska border west ward along U. S. Highway 30 to its junction with U. S. High way 138, thence south and west along U. S. Highway 138 to the Colorado-Nebraska state line. Gunners still interested in bagging the elusive quail can fire in the southern area until December 17. Both seasons opened on Oct. 26. Bag limits in the northern portion of the state are 5 in the daily bag and 10 in possession j and 6 and 18 In the southern i area. The population of geese at the Plattsmouth Waterfowl Man agement Area (Game Refuge) of the State Game Commission rose to between 22,000 and 23,000 Tuesday, resident manager Har old Edwards said Wednesday. This Is an all-time peak count for the refuge, he said. Previously, the high for a sea son was about 18,000 in 1961. Last year, he estimated the peak of visitors on the flight south through this flyway at 15,000. Edwards said there has been great fluctuation in numbers in recent days. A few days ago, the sojourning flock had dwindled to 13,000 to 14.000 as great numbers depart ed. Then, in a day or two the count rose to 20,000 and con tinued to climb to nearly 23,000. He said not all the arrivals were from the north. I Edwards doesn't know how long the main body of geese will stay. There is plenty of feed (grain and grass crops) on the refuge and geese could be around until mid-December If the pleas ant weather holds, although de partures ordinarily Increase greatly soon after the first of December.
