Whole No. 97 Richardson County Teacher's As sociation The regular fall meeting of the Richardson County Teach er's Association was held in Kails City , Friday evening and Saturday Nov.,10 and 11. Friday afternoon the Dawson High School Basket Ball Teams played the Falls City High School Basket Ball Teains. A good crowd witnessed the game. The Daxvsonlligh School Teams won. won.The The evening program was held in the Methodist Church. The room was fairly well tilled with appreciative listeners. The organ solo by Miss Etta Reich ers , and the Falls City High School chorus were both well received. Dr. Ross of the State University lectured on the sub ject , "The Near Future of American Society. " It was a strong , intereslin < r and inslruc- live , talk , The audience was the professors class. Dr. Ross did not attempt to entertain or make fun in any way. His lec ture was a thinking and reason ing exercise in which the whole audience took part , Some one handed Dr. Ross the following question and ask his answer , as a sociologist : ' Bill and Jim are school boj chums. Bill threw a snowball through the school house wind , ow. No one except Jim saw him do it. The next morning the teacher asked who threw the snow ball. Xo one answered After waiting two days , .fin tells on Bill. Resolved : tha Jim did right. " Dr. Ross' answer * swor is that Jim did do right The Saturday sessions wen .held in the Central school btlUd ing. The program as nnnounc was carried out. The interes was good and nearly everj teacher was present to take UK part assigned. Jake Ferer was circulating a subscription paper Thursday to raise money to send to Russia to assist in alleviating the suf fering of the Jews who have re ceivedsuch atrocious treatment at the hands of the Russian populace. A large sum was raised by Mr. Ferer as our citi- xens both Hebrews and Gentiles contributed generously to the worty cause. District Court. The fall term of the dUtric ! court will convene next Mon day with John B. Riiper , the new judge , on the bench. There is a great deal of business to be transacted as more than a year has elapsed since a jury term has been held in this county , It will be impossible to try many cases at this time" * how ever be. can.se of the new jury law. The lawyers are all afraid to risk tlie trial of a case of any import ance for the reason that no one has yet been found who can tell what the law means. Barada Fighters Fined. Pour young men and one old gentleman appeared before . 'Judge Wilhite Wednesday in re sponse to an urgent invitation , and plead guilty to an assault and battery commit ted at the Barada dance last Saturday night. They contributed two dollars and costs apiece towards the general welfare fund. Hades Boils Over At Barada. The dance given at the Slwl- en burg hall in Barada last Sat urday night ended in the usual rough house. Several young men who have been more or less active in depredations lately oncluded that the dance had gone far enough. They went to the-hall and proceeded todis- turb the young people and , up on .Mat Schulenburg remonstrat ing with them , used any weapon that was handy to convince that they were the real thing. Mr. Schulenburg's two sons came to the rescue and the scrap turned into a free lor all Beer bottles chairs and other articles lee numerous to mention tilled the air and when the smolce cleared away broken heads and black eyes mere numerous. We under stand the authorities are de termined to put a stop to this lawlessness by vigorous prose cutions. Commercial Club Meeting. The commercial club met at the court house Monday night in regular session. The court house was well filled by busi. ne&.s men who ielt a great inter , est in thesevoral matters whicli were upjor action. E. II. After a genera liscussion the club passed ; notion empowering the chair man to appoint a committee o three to lay before the cit ] council the desire of the busl ness men to admit the rura companies. It N generally be lieved that the council wil 'rant the request the club an repeal the ordinance so far a it prohibits the mutual compan ies from entering the city wit a toll line. The Tribune cor gratulates the club on its fai tieatment of the mutual com panics and hopes and believe that the rural phone member will reciprocate in the way ( trade and good will. The clu adjouriu-d at 10:30 : Mr. Lyford Entertains. V. G. Lyford entertained : six oclock dinner on last Tlnir day evening. Covers were lai for seventeen , the guests bein the employees in Mr. Lyford large department store and the families. After a bountiful r past the evening was most plei santly spent socially. Society News of the Week , Jack Koavis entertained u par ty of little friends at supper Monday evening in honor of his sixth birthday. Frances Maddo.x was hostess to the Methodist kcnsington this this week and the Hireling was a very pleasant one. The Lucky Thirteen club was entertained Thursday evening by Miss Nan Hutching * ut her spa cious country home. Fred Marmot of Dawson and Xella Sailors of Dawson were were united in marriage by Judge Wilhite Wednesday. Clara Boose entertained about twenty-live of her friends at a ; alTy pull Saturday evening. A royal time was enjoyed by all. Mr . Van Winkle and ( laugh- Grace entertained a few of their fridiids on Friday evening. The affair was a most pleasant one. The ladies of the Episcopal church gave a tea at the home of Judge Wilhite Wednesday even- ng whirl ) was a decided success. Mrs W. II. Wigton was the hostess of the married ladies Kcnsington club yesterday after noon at the home of her father , W. K. Dorrington. The ladies of the Christian church will hold their annual ba- xaar in McNalls grocery store December 0 to ' ) . All are wel come to come and visit them they have many nice things to show you. Herman Beachy entertained a few of his friends at his home in the country .Sunday. The guests were Goldie and Odie Fisher , Irene IJrodkey. Ruth Shock , Na than Si'lf , Will Carico and Ray Meyers. The Junior Rndeavor society of the Brethren church were pleasantly entertained at the home of Rev. Ilnskiiis on Friday evening from four to six o'clock A very plcasanl lime was had by all. Members of Ihe Elks club gave a dance in Iheir hall last Friday evening. Good music was fur- lished by an Italian string or chestra and the lloor was in ex cellent condition. About lifty couples enjoyed the occasion. The II. S.M.C. club was pluns- antly eiiteatained Saturday even ing by Nettie Cleveland. A verj interesting program was givei by the members and delicious re freshments served by the hostes ; made the pleasure of the cveninj complete. Dr. 13. R. Mathers and wife en tertaiiied the teachers ofthc pttl ; lie schools at their home Tuesda , day evening. The early part c the evening's entertainment con sisted of phonograph selection and at an appropriate hour n freshments were served. Mrs. T. J. Gist who leads th Methodist choir gave the men bers of that organization a plea sant surprise lasl Thursday cvt ning. A daintv repast had bee prepared in the basement of th church and after the regula practise the choir was invited ti partake of it. There were thirt present. The regular meeting of th Shakspeare Club was held Frida afternoon with Mrs. V. G. LI a ford as hostess. There was good attendance and much inte : est shown in the lesson for tli day. Kellogg the bird man , won the highest number of votes , as most popular entertainment on Chicago Central Y. M. C. A. Lecture course most expensive course in the world. The Kndcavor Society of the Christian Church gave a tin shower for Miss Krankie Dixon at the home of Mrs. Carrie Paxton - ton last Friday eveninjr , The affair was quite a surprise to Miss Dixon but wasncver-thc-less enjoyable to all. Mrs. I. nudes entertained twelve young ladies on Tuesday evening at progressive hearts , the affair being in honor of Miss Hillyer of Nebraska City. Wini fred Taylor won first pri e , while Mrs. llanur was awarded the consolation prixe. Refreshments added to the other pleasures. Mrs. Kathcrine Wylie entc tained the members of the L. li. T. club in a charming manner at her home on North Ilnrlan street Wednesday afternoon. The ladies found in this occasion much pleasure and ncmiine social en joyment. Mrs. Wylie served very nice refreshments. The regular meeting ol the Womans club will be held Tues day afternoon , November 21 in the council rooms. The club will be entertained by the home department which will furnish the Thanksgiving program. All members aiv requested to come and briiitf visitors. There was a good attendance last week of the Womans club and six new members added. Mie club enjoyed two excellent lapers ; one by Mrs. Win. " On Tuesday evening of this week about forty-live school nates of Celia Pjerson tendered ler a most pleasant birthda1 sur- ) rise at the beautiful home of Mr. and Mrs. John Crook in the lorth part of town. Music and mes furnished the even ings entcrtainiuent. Nice refresh- nents were served by Mrs. Crook. The Art Department of the Woman's club met with Mrs- John Oswald Tuesday afternoon. The program opened with a sketch of the life of Donizetti by Mrs. James Powell after which Miss Schoenheit read a discrip- tion of that composers opera , Lucrexia Borgia , which she illus trated by several piano selections , Mrs. Houston who was to have read a paper on Bellini was ab sent , and the program closed with a piano duct illustrating parts of LaSoinnambula by Mrs. Davies and Miss Kcicher > - . The next regu .ir meeting of the de partment will be held at the home of Mis' . Banks on Novem ber 28th. Mrs. Charles Banks and Miss Banks will give the first of a series of musical evenings , Thur- day November 23 unless the.
