Country Attorney.
In refering' to the county board
meeting ; relative to its action on
a reduction of the levy , our esteemed -
teemed temporary The Journal -
nal says : : " The board consulted
the couN'rRv attorney and through
him the Attorney Ge n c I' a 1. "
With this confession the opinion
scems unanimous and the COUN'l'HY
Attorney should cease to be the
subject of dcbat

i . J. Burkett. I
Hon. E. J. Burkett was a Falls
City visitor Saturday en route to
Rule where he made one of his
justly celebrated speeches at the
picnic. Mr. Burkett is in great
demand as a speaker not only in
his native state but all through
the United States. He will de-
vote his entire time to Nebraska
this year and will prove one of
thc most potent factors in tlw
republican victory which is so
sure to coma Mr. Burl ett while
here promised to use his best
efforts to secure Joseph Cannon
of Illinois , speaker of thc lower
house of congress , to deliver an
address in Falls City during thc
campaig-n. '
Short In Accounts.
An action has bec1 instituted
against Win J. Moran police
judge by the school board for thc
retention of fines collected by him
as such officer. The petition has
been filed in the district court
but having becn withdrawn from
thc files we arc unable to state
how much it is claimed vlr. Mo-
ran is sho\1. 'Vc arc informed
that thc matter will be settled and
that thc dcfendent will resign
his officc. It is said that thc
county board will investigate the
, record of the Justice court which
Mr. Moran has held for some
timc.
Lawn Contest.
Befcrc another issue of this
paper thc lawn contest will have
been deciled. Some will bc disappointed -
appointed perhaps , but the satis-
faction of having had a beautiful
and well kept lawn all summer
should amply compensate for the
labor. The action of Mr. Smith
and other public spirited men
should bc prodntivc of even
greater results next spring. Falls
City has had some of thc most
beautiful yards this summer
and the influence of those who
arc contestants has been noticable
in thc well kept lawns of their
neighbors who did not enter thc
. .
contest , "Virtucs , its own re-
ward"and so is a beautiful lawn.
A Negro Wotl1an's Plan.
Down in Virginia an aged pas-
tor fell sick not long ago and be-
ing greatly beloved , everybody
was much conccrned. A consis-
tan stream of visitors rang thc
door bell to make inquiries. The
nurse in charge was an old ncgo
woman who conceived the idea of
issuing bulletins , which she did
and pinned them on thc door.
This is thc way they read as they
appeared successively :
" Rev. Blank am very sick. " \
"Latcr-Hcy.Blank am worsc"
"Nig-ht-Hcv. Blank am sink-
ing' "
"l\Iorning-l . Blank am
sunk. "

which was performed by , Hc\

terian dmrch. The bridle has
resided in this city since a child
and is well known to thc Falls
City people , while the groom , a
young man of sterling qualities
is in thc employ of the D. I. ' : ? .1.

with their many friends in wish-
ing the young couple a happy

Lecture.
He\ Peter Van Fleet formerly
of thc Nebraska conference of thc
M. E. church delivered a lecture
on Porto Rico at the Methodist
church last Sunday morning.
Hey. Van Fleet has been , . . in thc
island for about three years as a
missionary and as such has had
unusual opportunities to study
thc country , its people and their
customs. It is to bc regretted
that it was not more generally
known that hc was to deliver this
lecture as it was most interesting
and instruct .
The reports that that climate
is so uniform the year around ,
that onc" cannot tell whether it is
January or July by consulting the
thcrmometer. Tobacco , coffee
and sugar arc among thc chief
products. The pastures are good
thc year through. Cattle men
arc not worried about hay or
shelter and the luxuriance of thc
grass permit thc pasturing of
many cattle on a few acres.
When thc United States took
possession of thc island there
were practically no school facil-
itics , now there has been provided
accomadntions for one fifth ot thc
children and thn work is progressing -
grcssingrapi ly. Dr. Van Fleet )
'will return to his work in at ) out
ten days.

Colts vs. Reds.
It was hard luck but we had to
swallow it and make no remarks
when Craig trotted ahead-on the
score book. It was an off clay for
thc Colts and as thc umpire used
rule Look of )7 Falls City lost thc
game Sunday in thc land of
jumping frogs and blooming
sunflowcrs. Two good double
plays were 111 adc by Heck and
Ruegge , while Scars put out two
by catching a swift foul in thc
seventh inning. ScoreR 'wcrc
run in by Fode , Glines and Heck.
Paxton put up thc speed package ,
Foster covered third in his best
Sunday g-o-to-meeting manner ,
while Cornell caught onto a good
one in center field and held onto
it. Potect made a peach of a
catch on a foul in thc first inning
and also secured a three base hit.
