Fourth. As usual nothing was

probably has the finest collection
of varieties of flowers. It is
a treat to see her yard in the

An appeal from the allowance
of a liquor license to Chas Mc
Clary by the village board of
Shubert was filed in the district
court this week. An annual
liquor contest from Shubert is as
certain as the seasons.
John Gilligan is away attend-
ing several important bridge
letting-so This firm docs busi-
ness in many different states.
The bridges it has built in this
county are among the best in the
west. Floods , overflows and de-
luges may come and go , hut our
bridges stay on fore\'er.
If you will not be in Falls City
before August 6th , send us your
subscription or pay. what you
may be in arrears and will record

Judge 'Vilhite and wife left
Monday evening for St. Louis.
The Judge sent Jas. 'Vhittaker
down last week to hold Gorman-
Hill-Bn'an and other democratic
leaders in shape until he could
get to St. Louis. There was
some fear that the proceedings
of the Democratic National con-
vention would be disorderly , but
if the Judge can't line them up ,
they can't be lined.
'Ve do not believe there is a
town within hundred mile that
can duplicate the stocks carried
by V. G. Lyford , F. \V. Cleveland
or Johnston & Sons.Ye saw
nothing in Hiawatha to compare
with them.
A reporter was in traylor's
drug store in Shubert one even-
ing this week and saw several
men in succession buy "social
smoke" cigars. It wasn't Hob-
son's choice either as the case
was full of other brands.

death rate among small children
is very high during the hot
weather of the summer months
