Edgccombc , formcly of this city. Although dcprivecl of his sight 1\,11' 1g-ecombc takes personal supervision of the business and gctsout mig-hty good newspa- per. He has a' big' plant includ- il1g a type setting machine and all thc other accessories of an 11p- to-datc printing office. It is evi- dent that he is making lots of money and that he' is a power in that community. - On thc return trip Monday the train stopped for nearly an hour at Fairmont and while there , wc saw an unusual sight. The wat- cr works pumping' station is near thc railroad and there is a stand pipe as big as that at Falls City. Thc cold weather had caused a covering of ice to form over the top of this standpipc. The pipe had been pumped full of water and thc pumps were trying to force in more while the icy covering - ering prevented it from flowing over the top. It was obvious that somcthing would have to happen and it did happcn. Thc ice gave way with a crash ; frag- men ts were thrown many feet in the air above thc the top of the standpipe , and seemed to hang for an instant suspended in the air , reflecting sunlight like giant diamonds and then they fell rattling to the frozen earth , and the water , relieved of the pressure lapped over the top of thc standpipe and , fell in a cloud of spray-and then thc train pul1cd out and thc man in front of us lighted such a vile cigar that wc were forced to g-o out on the platform and ride for , twenty milcs. - - . - . . .
