The McCook Commercial club met
fn regular session Tuesday evening
Some routine business was transact
ed An expression against the pro
posed local parcels post law was pass
ed by the club on the ground of its
being inimical to the best interests

Had Quite a Scare
Rozell Sons had quite a scare on
Monday morning upon entering their
clothing store on West B street to
find the room filled with smoke and
coal gas An investigation in the cel
lar revealed the cause spontaneous
comhustion in the lignite coal bunk
ers
The fire department soon had wat
er on the burning near coal which
was quickly subdued
The only damage was in smoke and
soot which engaged the clerical force
actively during the remainder of the
day in removing evidences
The offending lignite will be remov
ed

Extension of Mail Delivery
The local postoffice is arranging
to extend the delivery of mail by city
carriers to Fourth Street West from
P to H streets and to such por
tion of West McCook as has been sup
plied with adequate sidewalks and
crossings
The service on new territory will
begin on the 15th of February and
by order of the department no service
will be extended where a suitable let
ter box or other receptacle for the
mail is not provided
Delivery by rural carriers has also
been ordered to residents of South
McCook who will erect rural letter
boxes on the line traversed by the
carriers and the postmaster is en
deavoring to have the route of Car
rier M S Jimerson so changed as to
be able to serve the greater part of
that section of the city

Congregational Church Improvements
Work has been commenced on quite
important improvements to the Con
gregational churchproperty of our city
It is proposed to excavate the base
ment under the church evtensively
enough to accommodate a dining-
room kitchen and library in the base
ment in addition to the furnace room
and coal bunker When completed
this will make a decided addition to
the equipment of the church
Further it is stated that the Young
Ladies Dorcas society of the church
are undertaking to provide funds to
secure a pipe organ for the church

for the American Sunday school so
ciety gave a stereopticon lecture in
the Methodist church on last Sunday
evening before a union meeting of
the churches There was a full house
manifested in the simple story simp
ly illustrated of the Sunday school
work of his society in Nebraska The
American society through its mission
aries has accomplished great good in
Nebraska especially in the needy
western part of the state during the
many years they have occupied the
field
The further need of the work of
the society and of the active associat
ed endeavor of the churches is in
dicated by the startling fact that 300
000 boys and girls in this common
wealth are not receiving the instruc
tion and training of the Sunday
schools
Rev B L Webber of this city is
doing efficient work in this district
which is composed of the counties of
the 14th judicial district He and
Mr Kimberly were well received on
Monday in their effort to secure funds
in McCook to assist in advancing this
work

House Badly Damaged
The Minnie Brown property on
West A street was badly damaged by
fire Thursday afternoon The prop
erty was not supposed to be occupied
at the time The origin of the fire
is not known The department re
sponded promptly to the alarm and
