and brotherhood of railway trainmen are meeting in Chicago during the present week to take up with the management of the Burlington railroad matters relating to the application of the new rate of pay to the schedule The conductors were given a straight 10 per cent raise in pay and this increase affects every trainman in the service includ ing flagmen baggagemen brakemen and conductors Some revision of the rules will be insisted on and the conference may extend over several days because of the large amount of detail work to be gone over The conference began on Wednesday It is said the revision will be made without further hint of labor trouble and that much of the work to be done is largely clerical The conductors and trainmen are proud of the fact that their recent conference with the managers was so well conducted that there was no hint of labor trouble no scare for business interests and no thought of a strike Concessions made by the western lines to their conductors and train men in the settlement of the latters wage demands at Chicago will entail an addition to the payrolls of the sev eral companies of 5000000 a year in the aggregate Fifty roads were concerned in the controversy and the increase in wages granted was on a 10 per cent basis 75000 employes be ing benefitted Taken in conjunction with the settlement effected by the same roads to their engineers a short time ago the agreements provide a total of 9000000 increase in wages for the employes of those lines with in a week A total of 20000 conduc tors and 55000 trainmen will be bene fitted by the new
