Chicago Nov 10 Locomotive fire
men of forty two railroads went of
Chicago today filed demands for a
wage increase of 20 to 25 per cent Ap
proximately 25000 men are involved in
the demands and their territory covers
all the west wmthwnt and northwest
portions of the United States
Coupled with the demindfl for higher
wages is another for recognition of the
claim of the brothe hood of locomotive
firemen to for enineers who
are members if the firemans crganiza
tion
No time limit is eet for an answer to
the demands but tho firemen urge that
they be given a hearing before a com
mittee of managers representing the
railroads in the west so as to expedite
the negotiations and raako uniform
schedules
In substance the demands to the
general managers are
Firemen in passenger service 20 per
cent increase over exisiting rates
Firemen on through and irregular
freight local freight and mixed train
service helpers and wcrk train service
25 per cent increase

The meeting of agents and operators
of the McCook division of the C B
Q Railway which was announced in a
foimers issue of the Gazette was held
last Saturday night Nov 6 1909 in the
L W Wright office in the Picket block
While the attendance was small on ac
count of the heavy business on the roid
there was as large a crowd as was ex
pected
General Chairman C L Lamb of
Red Oak Iowa was present and gave
an enteresting talk for the good of the
order His remarks embraced a his
tory of the work of the order during the
past five years He reports the organi
zation in fine condition both financially
and fraternally and it h only a matter
of time until a much better understand
ing will exist between employer and em
ployee to their mutual benefit
Arrangements are made to hold regu
lar meetings at various places on this
division and no doubt the boys will
meet in Wray in the near future Wray

Blanche Casten Married
A quiet wedding took place last night
at the home of Mr and Mrs Lewis Cas
ten 512 East Seventeenth street when
their daughter Miss Blanche Casten be
came the wife of Mr William Marti
The ceremony was performed at eight
oclock by Dr George C Rafter and was
witnessed by the family and a few other
relatives The bride was gowned in a
tailored traveling gown of blue cloth
There were no attendants The house
was profusely decorated with pink carn
ations Following the ceremony a sim
ple wedding supper was served after
which Mr and Mrs Marti left on a two
weeks trip to Denver They will live in
Cheyenne going to housekeeping imme
diately on their return Cheyenne

Death of Mrs C P Viland
Last Thursday evening Oct 28 1909
Mrs C P Viland who lived east of Be
loit died of p walsis aged 55 vcnr
Carrie Toft was born in Norway in
1854 and came to America when but
two jears old She was married April
16th 1873 to Mr C P Viland For
some years the family lived atShnlhahl
Iowa going from there to McCook
Nebraska in 1885 They made their
home at McCoik until 1898 when they
came to Canton and they havo made
their home in this vicinity ever since
Quite recently they built a now home
just east of Beloit A week ago Sunday
while returning from the morning Luth
eran service Mrs Viland was stricken
with paraljsis and was taken into the
home of A O Richardson and medical
aid was summoned Up to that time she
had seemed to be unusually well and
she failed rapidly after the stroke soon
lobing consciousness and remained un
conscious to the time of her death
Funeral services were held at the hon c
Sunday afternoon at 3 oclock conduct
ed by Rev P H Tettle and the re
mains were laid to rest in the Beloit
cemetery
Tho deceased leaves two sisters Mrs
P S Hanson of Canton and Mrs Ed
gar Hilton of Hudson a husband two
sons and three daughters Mrs Will
Millage Canton E tward P Viland
Roundup Mont Tillie Viland Beloit
Mrs A C Johnson of Netteberg S
D and Andrew Viland of Roundup
Mont all of whom were present at the
funeral except Mrs Millage who is sick
In their sudden bereavement the family
