time would when grown to man hood be one of the greatest labor lead ers the world has ever known His activity in the labor movement began in 1SSG Mr Mitchell is also a splendid orator and a man who keeps his head on all occasions as the following story will show One evening he was a guest at a Philadelphia club where it was the rule of the organization to call upon its guests to speak and then to con fuse them with remarks But Mr Mitchell could not be confused The only notice he took of the gibes was to say I guess I could get along better with my speech if I were deaf It is often a good thing to be deaf There is a deaf old woman I know up in the coal regions Once I went to see this woman and she asked me to stay to tea I thanked her and said I would as I was not expected home before dark She had been hearing pretty well up to this point but now she got deaf all of a sudden She had to ask her daughter what I had said He said mother explained the daughter that he thanks you but he cant stay as he is expected home be fore dark At this the old woman looked re lieved and I departed Frank Morrison secretary of the American Federation of Labor has held that office for a number of umns were printed in the newspapers all over the land about the tours and the cycJNts were great attractions vhereer tii appeared hen th t mode of covering the jJHe heaic isure common some ven turesome pedestrians started to walk the distance and intense interest was also taken in these journeys Now we have an around the world jour jy that for novelty sin passes anything of the kind ever before undertaken This is the tour of two Italians who propose to cover the distance with a barrel one lm sl j v 7 -v - - HOLTilNa AROUND THE WORM rolling it until he gets tired when the other takes his turn and as shown in the accompanying illustration there is always an opportunity for one of the men to rest without delaying the jour ney The moving home is a novel affaii and has been put together with no lit tle ingenuity In it are a bed and scat which are mounted on axles so that as it rolls these remain in position Here is a suggestion for the fresh air crank who wants all tire windows in the train open when he travels and also for the parsimonious chap whose hotel bills spoil much of the pleasures of tho trip A Devoted Couple One of the most devoted couples in this country is Thomas It Marshall and his wife of Indiana When Pres ident Tafts trip down the Mississippi was arranged re 8I11P GOVERNOR 3IAR SIIALI cently many gov ernors were invit ed to make the journey with him including Govern or Marshall Al though fully real izing and appreci ating the honor of accompanying the distinguished par ty Mr Marshall declined frankly stating that he did not wish to be sep arated from his wife even for so short a time The Marshalls have been most de voted since their marriage and the closeness of their intimacy and their mutual reluctance to be separated were foreshadowed in the gubernatorial campaign of last year when Mrs Mar shall was so frequently with her hus band at places where he was billed to speak She was not always at his meetings but she was in the immedi ate neighborhood and was usually joined promptly by Mr Marshall after the speaking and resulting handshak ing were over THE CUNNING MOORS Dogs Used by Them to Draw the Spanish Fire We have heard a great deal in the past few years about dog police and dog detectives but these clever ca nines must now make room in the limelight for some other fourfooted marvels These are the dog soldiers that are being used with such good effect in the Spanish Moroccan trou ble Major Richardson of England the bloodhound expert who recently re- SS - R - 0wi HOW DOGS ARE XSED BY THE MOORS TO DRAW THC SPANISH 1IRE turned from Morocco gives an inter esting account of how the Moors use dogs to draw the Spanish fire The animals he says are dressed in white turbans and gowns and sent in front of the Spanish soldiers who soon be gin firing at the supposed Moors The Riffs who meanwhile have taken cov er now haw the enemy located and have no difficulty in wounding and killing a number of the Spaniards This is only one of the many tricks used by the Moors in their affair with Spain and they have shown them selves to be fees not easily conquered The accompanying illustration gives one a pretty good idea of how they use the canines to fool the Spaniards f 77 Jyalff7 r Siisstkaisim rjr i iiiLUP iw I T iifvjv mrrysjn i KM Aft V 1 fc - i t - fcl ri JS NoLlmeFliospIiaies GOOD NEWS Many
