Taking Care of Yourself
There never -was a time -when peo
ple paid as much attention to their
health and strength as they do now
Time was when fine stock and fine
horses were fed more carefully than
human beings
The result of properly balanced ra
tions has worked wonders with stock
and recent experiments are proving
that the same thing is true of man
kind
It has been found that Quaker Oats
eaten often and regularly taking the
place of heavy greasy foods will work
wonders in the health and strength of
a family
School children fed frequently on
Quaker Oats thrive physically and are
always capable of the best work at
school For athletes laborers it is
the best food One of the attractive
features of Quaker Oats is the perfect
way it is packed Besides the regular
size package there is the large size
family package 10

Safe Remedies In Illness as Opposed to
The Use of Alcoholics
Compiled by Mrs Martha M Allen
The question What shall I take in
stead of alcohol is frequently asked
by those who think s nto form of alco
hoi really necessary to the cure of di
sease but who from principle would
prefer other agents if they knew of them
The question shows lack of knowledge
of the teachings of non alcoholic physi
cians who have repeatedly stated that
in most ailments alcohol is not only use
less but positively harmful its reputa
tion as a curative agency resting solely
upon its power to deaden sensation
The patient die not feel the same un
easy sensations after taking it as before
hence thinks he is better lie does not
know that the cessation of uneasiness
results from the benumbing of his ca
pacity for fe licg This benumbing of
the nerves is really the beginning of the
effect which with continued doses be
comes complete intoxication Those ask
ing for Substitutes for Alcohd are
referred to the following expressions of
non alcoholic physician-
In abandoning the use of alcohol it
should becleirly understood that we
abandon an injurious influence and es
cape from a source of disease as we do
when we get into a purr atmosphere
There is not the slightest occasion to do
anything or to take anytning to make
up for the loss of a strengthening or
supporting agent No loss has been in
curred save the loss of a cause 1 f disease
and death Dr J J Ridge of London
Temperance Hospital
Sir B W Richardson M D said of
the London Temperance Hospital No
alcohol is administered and no substi
tute for it Any drug with similar ac
tion would be bad warmth and suitable
nourishment are relied on to keep up the
system We know that people who take
alcohol often feel better this is from
the narcotic action The pain may be
stilled and the disease forgotton but it
has not been removed -its symptom has
been narcotised
Dr Nathan S Davis Sr of Chicago
said to the writer Tell the women to
ask for Safe Remedies not for substi
tutes for what is injurious
In the whole history of its unholy
alliance with medicine alcohol has not
cured a single disease perse it is an
antidote for nothing a specific for noth
ing a cure for nothing a preventive of
nothing Medical Temperance Jour
nal England
SAFE REMEDIES IN ILLNESS
To dull the sense of pain with spirit
uous liquors without taking any further
trouble about the mischief which it indi
cates is foolish Danish Physiology
The following remedies and opinions
are culled from the writings of physi
cians
Alcoholic Craving Free use of ripe
fruit Hot water when the craving
comes on Abstinence from meats and
highly seasoned foods A dose of one
half drachm of ipecacuanna to produce
full vomiting will by the removal of the
morbid secretions from the stomach
cause the desire for alcohol to immed
iately subside Dr Higginbotham in
British Medical Journal
Anaemia In the treatment of anaemia
port wine and other alcoholics are worse
then useless Dr J J RidgeLondon
Deficiency of nutrition of light and
pure air are common causes Remove
the cause Use simple and easily di
gested foodB as eggs milk good butter
milk puree of peas beans or lentils
rice well cooked gruels and other pre
parations of grains A careful course
of physical training is essential in some
cases DrJ H Kellogg Battle Creek

Sympathy of the Flowers
More or less credence is still given
in England to the old belief
in
the
sympathy of the vegetable kingdom
for human suffering I prayed all

on my window sill drooped and I said
to myself they were dead But toward
morning they picked up and I was
sure enough the master was better
And the same thing had happened to
the flowers I had sent to his bedroom
They were dying and they came to life
again And I knew when those flow
