Cantata JACK AND THE BEAN STALK
Words by Laura FArmitago Music by Richardson Caldwell
Argument
This operetta is founded on the old story of Jack and the Bean Stalk Jacks
mother is very poor and they are obliged to sell their cow Jack sells tho cow to the
butcher for some beans which the butcher persuades him to believe will bring him
some money Jacks mother throws the bpans away but they take root and grow
in a single night A fairy appea s who tells Jack about tho giant his gold and his
wonderful hen which lays oggs She claims that the hen once belonged to Jacks
father but was stolen by the giant and urges Jack to climb the bean stalk and go
to the castle for it Jackdoo so enters the castle is hidden by the giants wife
and when the giant is about to discover his presence calls for the fairy who at once
appears and charms the giant while Jnc runs off with tho hen Jac cuts down
the bean stalk when he reaches tho foot and he and his mather live in peace and
plenty ever after A party of Jacks playmates appear several times on the scenes
