PUBLIC LIBRARY NOTES
Who shall decide when doctors dis
agree
And soundest casuists doubt like you
and me
Doctors and critics are much alike
each works upon his own theory and
often to a disagreement One eminent
critic writing of the work of Thackery
can hardly call him a great novelist be
cause he insists upon the intrusion of
himself into his novels and makes him
self more conspicuous betweeD the lines
then his characters upon the lines
Another critic of equal eminence and
learning lauds Thackeray for this
same characteristic trait of putting him
nelf into his novels with remarkable
truthfulness and so giving life to his
work
If you the reader then feel inclined
to be supercritical you will find some
one high in literary authority to agree
with you whichever opinion you may
hold and will have cause to be well sat
isfied with yourself in that you have
reached the plane of other master
minds
If however jou are desirous of read
ing for your personal pleasure and are
content to leave criticism to the critics
you will find much to enjoy and great
reason to marvel that a man has creat
ed characters and accidents so like rsal
life
Thackeray placed his pictures upon a
large canvas and worked them out with
a minuteness of detail which gives the
reader of today who is impatient of
delay in getting at the story a chance
to complain of his wordiness To the
thoughtful reader however his style
does not suffer by comparison that of
tho author of Graustark or of Rich
ard Carval both of whom are creators
of some of the best sellers
Thackeray may be guilty of snobbery
as his accusers assert but he has writ
ten novels that have lived and will con
tinue to live after many a one written
by authors who repudiate snobbishness
has been long forgotten
You can read Thackeray feeling al
ways that you are in good company
