department of trade REVOLUTIONARY MEMORIES Their Revival In tho Dedication of tht Fort Lee Monument The monument at Fort Lee N J which was unveiled a sliort time ago marks another step in the movement for preservation of the picturesque Palisades or the Hudson and it serves also to perpetuate the memories con nected with the romantic history of tbij beautiful region At the un veiling ceremonies George W Perkins president of the commission in charge of the Palisades Interstate park made the announcement that a half million dollars has now been expended in the creation of the park and all of the Pal isades and river front from Fort Leo to Nyack have now been purchased for It except one or two parcels the title for which will be in the commissions hands by next year Governor Fort of New Trenton relating to the recapture of the fort by the Americans from the British oil May 1 i 1TS1 It was on Nov 20 177G that General Greene and the American forces evacuated Fort Lee and they at that time narrowly escaped capture by 5000 British under Cormvallis Soldiers of the regular army civil and Spanish war veterans and sailors and marines from the new battleship New Hampshire took part in the dedi cation of the monument which shows a Continental soldier his musket slung over his shoulder climbing up the Pali sades while a drummer boy is aiding him The sculptor is Carl E Tefit Mr Tefft was born in New York city in 1874 He has executed various por trait busts and ideal iigures and was creditably represented in the sculpture of the Buffalo and St Louis exposi tions MRS LEWIS S CHANLER
