Next to blasphemy the unforgivable
sin of the world is selfishness
The measure has passed the house
appropriating S8000 for a site for a gov
ernment building at McCook
The worst criticism to be offered
against the Let Us Alone motto is the
painful fact that so many bad people
are emphatic in its adoption Even to
Old Nick himself it leaves nothing to
be desired
It is not the purpose of our friend
Byfield of the Indianola Reporter to be
damned by low aim He expects that
voting contest to place The Reporter at
the head of Southwestern Nebraska
weeklies in circulation
The Nebraska delegation in congress
is to be commended for its protest
against the donothing policy of that
body And for its disposition to decline
to submit to the dictation and auto
cratic conduct of Speaker Cannon
For the six months ending March
31st 190S the Burlington in Nebraska
had gross earnings of 997763721
operating expenses 8571453445 leav
ing 426210276 From this deducting
38484605 one half taxes for the year
ending March 31 1908 the net earnings
for the entire Burlington system in
1906 ending June 30 as reported were
757951667
The race is not always to the swift
The Burlingtons unusual speed in
transporting California fruit specials
has resulted in part at least in its losing
that desirable transportation item
The contrast with the slow work on the
Union Pacific which consumed about
48 hours more time between Denver
and Chicago has resulted in the South
ern Pacific routing most of its fruit
specials via Union Pacific Its a nasty
bunch to hand fruit dealers but what
are you going to do about it
Let nobody be deceived into the be
lief that the Missouri born Met us
alone prosperity association which
has been making itself prominent the
past two weeks represents the public
opinion of any city or state Nominally
the association is an organization of
western business men to plead for po
litical peace until business has improv
ed Actually it is a movement engine
ered by eastern railroads in the effort to
check the public efforts to regulate the
railroads It belongs with the numer
ous decoy organizations launched by
the railroads during the rate bill debate
in 1905 and 19C6 Lincoln Journal
A Thoughtless Dirty Practice
The practice of unloading manure etc
on the highway or along the same just
south and west of the West McCook
crossing of the Burlington should be
promptly stopped by the proper author
ities It is unsightly and a menace to
driving Several accidents have already
occurred on account of horses becoming
frightened The county commissioners
some time ago posted notice forbidding
dumping at that place
