Lareest Circulation in Red Willow Co
Subscription 1 a Year in Advance
Onk of the silly tendencies of the day
is the multiplication of political parties
every organization or interest or prin
ciple must neods have a party It is for
tho most part an exhibition of selfish
ness and a waste of tune energy and
means Tho average Anifarican is now
sulliciently confused by many parties
and isms and has about all he can do to
Tote intelligently Why further obscure
and complicate and mislead
Akk there good and sufficient reasons
why Red Willow county should receive
two or three per cent per annum on her
daily balances in the several banks of
the county while the city of McCook
receives nothing at all from that source
notwithstanding there have been and
are times when the citys balances are
uito considerable In this connection
too Tiik Tkiounb directs attention to
the platforms of the past few years on
this point Have pledges been kept
On behalf of tho publisher and pro
prietor himself Thr Tkiuunb has not
been jeeticulating wildly or vociferating
loudly as touching the matter now
luminously before the people of McCook
the ownership and management of cer
tain utilities However those who have
followed us intelligently in years agone
will remember that The Tkibunk is no
new convert to the theory of municipal
ownership of certain utilities of the type
of tho natural monopolistic or non com
petitive sort but has always been and
is now an advocate of and beliver in the
principle justly applied
There may be room for much argu
ment on the Aldrich banking bill but
at least one feature of the proposed law
receives general approval among the peo
ple namely the proviso requiring na
tional banks to pay interest at the rate
of one per cent per annum on govern
ment deposits If any room for com
plaint exists it is in that the interest
Tate is too low it should be at least two
5er cent Such a law now exists in the
3tates requiring state and county treas
urers to deposit funds in bonded banks
paying two per cent interest and in
many cities interest is also paid on daily
balances of public funds Tho govern
ment now has 250000000 in national
lanks for which the government at least
is not receiving a penny This is wrong
and the Aldrich bill if it becomes a law
will put a quietus on this monumental
graft if it does no other good The pub
lic is fairly entitled to the legitimate
earnings of its deposited funds whether
the funds be national state county or
municipal the principle is a common
one
The Tribune has no objections of a
personal nature to Charlie Kelley one
of the uotrinees for city engineer He
is a very clever young fellow But
there are two valid reasons to us why
he should not be elected to the technical
and important position of city engineer
at this time In the first instance he
has not had the training and experience
the position demands the technical
knowledge of a city engineer And se
jondly because he has involved a too
2arge personal interest in matters which
Trill likely come up for disposition in
ihat office And this second reason is
not intended in any sense as a reflection
but a mere statement of fact un
biased uncolored without prejudice
Mr Meeker has in our judgment the
two qualities lacking He is an exper
ienced trained technical civil engineer
with special experience and long practi
cal knowledge of many years in matters
aow pressing in the city for solution
3Ience we believe it would only be the
3imple part of wisdom and prudence for
Uie people of McCook to elect him

McCooks New High School Building
The high school at McCook has just occupied a new building This
u ilding is not entirely completed but when it is finished will be one o
the finest structures both from the view point of architectural beauty
and adequate modern and complete arrangement and equipment in Ne
braska It cost 810000 and well may the citizens congratulate themselves
upon the splendid investment This 30000 is to bear compound interest
for an indefinite number of years The building is planned and will be
equipped for manual training and domestic science work a gymnasium
and perfectly sanitary and convenient toilet rooms The heating and ven
tilation system is perfect as well as the lighting The walls will be tinted
in soft colors and the copies of the masterpieces framed and beautifully
toned afford the decoration The ceiling of the great high school assembly
room is panelled and leading from this room are three recitation rooms
and a large and well equipped laboratory The superintendents office oc
cupies the most commanding quarters in the building and will be model
In looking through this splended building and in visiting and observ
ing the teaching in the sixteen grade rooms one wonders cur est And
the answer came swift and sure McCook like Diogenes of old has gone
out deliberately in the broad daylight with a lantern of material light
and unlike that old philosopher found a man The prevailing spirit of
the whole system the crystallized thought shown in the minutely and
masterfully planned high school building is that of a young man the city
superintendent George H Thomas who has been the educational irriga
tion ditch of McCook for eight years
