Comedy In a Back Street
About 10 oclock one morning two
men met and began threatening and
calling each other names One finally
called the other a liar and the two
men were about to grapple when a
woman opened the door and said
Gentlemen are you about to fight
We are they answered together
Then have the kindness to wait n
moment she continued My hus
band has been sick for weeks and Is
now just able to sit up Ho is very
downhearted this morning and if
youll only wait till I can draw him
up to the window I know hell be very
grateful to both of you
She disappeared into the house and
after one look into oach others face
the men smiled shook hands and de
parted together London Telegraph
A Coo Un
Hes a cool un is the way the sol
diers in a certain English regiment de
scribed one of their officers a young
man whose self possession In a time of
danger saved his men from defeat and
probably from death The circumstance
which gave this officer his reputation
is related by Itudyard Kipling
A very young officer who had gone
almost straight from school to the army
and thence to India was leading his
company through a rocky pass on re
turning from a scouting expedition
They were beset by the enemy who
fired at them from behind the rocks
and the men were growing very un
steady Those in the rear began to be
impatient and shouted to the men in
front Hurry urr What are yon wait
ing for there
The young officer answered quite
coolly Ilold on a minute Im light
ing my pipe
And he struck a match and lit It
There was n roar of laughter and a
soldier called out Wrll since youre
so pressin I think Ill have a pipe my
self And he too struck a match and
began to smoke This bit of fun stead
ied the men and they came through in
good order
