The platform at the freight house is
being extended westward giving more
needed transfer room in handling the
heavy freight business at this point
With almost a hundred engines on the
McCook division no engine failures

to Lucy postoffice near Dunning Neb
raska last Thursday by the death of
his little baby whose remains arrived
here Sunday night and were buried on
the following afternoon Mrs Cline
was at the home of her parents Mr and
Mrs S J Martin when the baby was
fatally stricken
The appointment of Master Mechanic
F E Kennedy of the McCook division
to a similar position at Sheridan Wyo
ming his former home comes as an
item of surprise to many here He is
thought to be peculiarly qualified for
that position being especially familiar
with the needs and conditions of that
difficult division of the Hill roads He
has been up at Sheridan part of this
week though he will not formally enter
upon his new position until Sept 1

School Will Open September lth
At a meeting of the board of education
held this week it was decided to open
the fall and winter term of public school
Monday morning September 17th This
later-than-usual date is the result of the
recent moving of the West ward build
ing to a new location and its need of re
pairs
BURLINGTON RELIEF MAY QUIT
Recent Law Invalidates Releases Secured
by the Company
Unless a decision of tho supreme
court repealing an act of congress passed
at the last session can be secured with
in the next few months the Burlington
Relief may go out of business as will
also five or six similar institutions in the
United States The officials of the Bur
lington are purported on good author
ity to have reached this decision short
ly after the passage of a measure which
holds that the release secured by the
company upon the payment of disability
and death benefits is no protection from
damage suits which might ensue later
A conference of all tho companies in
the country will be held in the uear fu
tureat which the best counsel available
will be employed to tes the validity of
the measure in the highest court of the
United States In the event that the
release is held valid the relief will con
tinue to be conducted on its present
basis but not otherwise
A rumor that the Relief would go out
of business shortly has been in circula
tion for some time and the matter has
been a subject of deep concern ro tho
employees all over the system The re
port that the reason for the move was
that the institution was on a shakey
financial basis is entirely unfounded
The reserve now on hand is sufficient for
all possible exigencies and the action is
simply one of expediency The cost of
conducting the Relief exceeds 883000 a
year for medical examiners and office
help alone and in view of the fact that
the company is still liable for damage
suits it is regarded as being inadvisable
to continue the concern along the pres
ent lines Galesburg Evening Mail
Dietrich was Promoted
Julius Dietrich master mechanic of
the Lincoln division of the Burlington
has been promoted to be assistant sup
erintendent of motive power for the
lines west of the river under Superin
tendent Roope the successor of R D
Smith Mr Dietrich has been twenty
years in the service of the Burlington
and has won an enviable record as an
operating official He will be succeeded
by G C Johnson of Sheridan who will
in turn be replaced by F E Kennedy of
McCook Lincoln Star
Weldenhamer May Go West
It is rumored that P E Weidenham
er superintendent of the Sheridan divi
sion of the Burlington will be trans
ferred to other duties and that E P
Bracken superintendent of the Sterling
division will take his place These di
visions are in the Wyoming district
under the new arrangement of Burling
ton line3 The changes are said to be
operative September 1 Lincoln Star
